ᐅ Mold in the compartments of a KALLAX after basement storage – any experiences?

Hello everyone,

I recently used a KALLAX shelving unit from IKEA for storage in my basement. Unfortunately, when I was emptying it, I discovered mold had formed in some of the compartments—mainly on the inner sides of the carcasses and partly on the wooden material itself.

I’m interested to know if anyone else has had similar experiences with a KALLAX shelf left in a basement for an extended period. What were the conditions in your basement (temperature, humidity)?

Most importantly, what measures did you take to address the mold growth inside the compartments? Are there effective methods to keep the furniture mold-free permanently or at least treat it preventively?

I’m looking forward to your tips and experiences, as I would like to keep the shelving unit and not dispose of it right away. Thanks in advance!

Mold growth in the KALLAX compartments after storage in the basement is a result of high relative humidity and poor air circulation.

Cause analysis: KALLAX is typically made of particleboard with a melamine coating, which swells when it absorbs moisture and becomes more susceptible to mold. Basements without regular ventilation or with high humidity are therefore problematic.

Recommendations:
1. Measure the humidity with a hygrometer (ideal value < 60%).
2. Use dehumidifiers or desiccants.
3. Place the furniture directly on floor protection or ensure a gap from the wall.
4. Clean with an antimicrobial cleaner, such as products containing hydrogen peroxide or specialized wood preservatives.
5. Finally, treat surfaces with moisture-resistant varnishes or sealants.

Long-term action is crucial: keep the basement dry; otherwise, any cleaner will only be effective temporarily.

If mold has already penetrated deeply into the material, replacing the damaged parts is recommended.

Mold in the basement on KALLAX: Reduce moisture, dry the shelf, then treat it with vinegar. Alternatively, use a clear wood varnish. Check ventilation frequently.

Exactly. In addition to the measures mentioned, I recommend improving air circulation in the basement. A small fan or an electric ventilation system can work wonders. This helps to prevent mold from developing in the first place.

Vinegar is not ideal for many materials, especially on painted or coated surfaces of the KALLAX, as it can damage the finish. Fungicidal cleaners specifically designed for furniture are a better option.

Exactly, but anyone expecting this to completely dry out a damp basement wall will be disappointed. In the end, everything depends on the building structure. A few fans are not a cure-all.
