We are currently building, and I don’t want to have tiles on the walls except directly in the shower area—not even around the bathtub. My partner and our plumber have just tried to persuade me otherwise, saying that where the bathtub meets the wall, it won’t be properly sealed without tiles.
Since I have no experience in this, I’m turning to you for advice. Has anyone dealt with this before?
Thanks in advance for your answers!
Best regards, cornelia84

Moisture-resistant paint does not waterproof a wall.
There are other options besides tiles, but these would always involve attaching something to the wall.
Regarding the silicone joint, they are also correct: the paint surface is not smooth but uneven at a microscopic level. I can also imagine that silicone does not bond well with paint. In that case, the joint would not be able to hold back water.
