Hi all,

We are currently building a single-family house and have very large windows on the garden side. During the structural engineering calculations, it was found that using Poroton blocks (17.5cm (7 inches)) for the exterior wall in the areas with these large windows, which almost make up the entire wall, causes some issues.

The general contractor is now installing sand-lime bricks instead of Poroton blocks around the window corners to ensure load-bearing capacity. According to the structural engineer, this is acceptable. However, I have read in forums that mixing Poroton and sand-lime bricks, even when Poroton is used for the exterior wall and sand-lime bricks for the interior wall, can lead to cracking due to different shrinkage behaviors.

Could this cause the ceiling to become uneven over time if the sand-lime bricks shrink, or could the load from the house at the back no longer be properly supported?

I hope you can help...

Good luck

The structural engineer will not base their assessment on forum discussions—I believe it will be fine. In the past, monolithic constructions often used higher-density bricks, for example, solid clay bricks. This seems like a similar approach here and is likely not the first time either method has been applied.

I am familiar with such recommendations and usually associate them with wallpapering or plastering without expansion joints at locations where one type of brick suddenly changes “around the corner” to the other behind it.
