Hello,

For various reasons, my office is going into the basement (existing, renovation), where I have a separate entrance and some peace and quiet. Since I spend a lot of time (actually most of it) working from home and therefore in this room, it would be nice to bring in a bit more natural light.

The plan is to expand the two small existing basement windows into a large light well, facing almost exactly south, towards the garden. We have now come across the light well system (you can find it via Google), which looks very sensible. If it works as intended, it would greatly improve the room.

Now the question: Does anyone know this system, have experience with it in real life, or perhaps know of alternatives? The price based on an inquiry is about 12,000 EUR, which isn’t cheap but would be worth it to me. So cost is not the issue — maybe there are even better systems that I simply haven’t found?

Thanks in advance for your support!

Best regards

I don’t think the Knecht floodlight idea is bad at all – it also looks quite stylish. However, when I looked into it back then, it wasn’t clear whether they offer this as a component for renovations or external projects, or if it’s only available as a modular element for their own prefabricated basements.

Do I have a different Google? I only see “standard light wells”… no system light wells…

You could upload a photo.
If it’s not about the common €120 (about $130) light wells, here’s another suggestion: excavate a semicircle in front of the window and cover it with rocks (or other materials). Almost cost-neutral and guaranteed to bring in light, plus an activity for the kids.

It most likely refers to the mirror shaft system from Heliobus.

Yes, of course I mean the mirrored shaft from Heliobus – sorry. I even managed to mention it correctly in the title.

The terrace will be built in front of it, or the path around the house/between the pool and terrace, which ideally should be covered with glass so you can walk over it.
There’s plenty of kid entertainment just around the corner anyway.

Interesting. You can get quite a lot for 12,000€ (about 12,000 USD).
The technology isn’t new (anyone who has taken a basic optics course knows the "mirror system"…).

Not bad, the Specht. It wouldn’t be worth it for me at all. I would build it myself.
But if you believe the expenditure adds good value for you… I find it hard to imagine anyone here in the forum has installed it.
