For our new build (36.5 cm (14.4 inches) Poroton masonry), we requested several quotes for windows with integrated roller shutters – almost all windows in the house are floor-to-ceiling, and the lintels align with the ceiling level. Some suppliers offer roller shutters with boxes only 21.5 cm (8.5 inches) high even for window heights of 235 cm (92.5 inches). Others say that 30 cm (11.8 inches) boxes are necessary, apparently due to higher insulation requirements.
We would prefer to choose the 21.5 cm (8.5 inches) boxes because we want to keep the window area as large as possible. Would there actually be any reason not to go for these? They need to be insulated separately anyway – or is that not the case?

Hello Marcel,
all the boxes are properly insulated. This is not related to the height of the box.
The issue is the so-called winding radius, commonly referred to as “the roll inside.” The thickness of this roll depends on the slat size and the height of the windows. Slats range from mini slats starting at 34 mm (1.3 inches) up to maxi slats with a width of 54 mm (2.1 inches). This is primarily an aesthetic consideration. Naturally, the larger the slat, the larger the roll (winding radius) will be.
For your case, in my opinion, 30 cm (12 inches) is the only option. There are only one or two manufacturers that make smaller ones. However, due to the required height of the roll, the box would be quite shallow.

One of these manufacturers is Europe’s largest window manufacturer, which also sells the most windows in Europe (see attachment). If the boxes were actually that shallow in design, this probably wouldn’t be a secret given their sales figures, or am I possibly missing something?
I don’t want to defend my preferred design blindly, but I’m just trying to understand the counterarguments. So far, I haven’t found any negative experiences online.
I know the manufacturer! I have shared my opinion and experience with you. We are talking about 8 cm (3 inches) and long-term use. The decision is yours! The manufacturer itself is not bad, but they cannot work around the geometries.
@guckuck2 This isn’t about what the market offers; I’m fully aware of that myself. The manufacturer must ensure that the roller fits inside the box given the chosen slat and the window height. Please make sure to read the posts fully.
