Hello

I have the following question for you: We had 45 Halox boxes installed with mineral wool panels in the concrete ceilings on the ground floor and first floor. The electrician recently asked me who will make the openings for the recessed spotlights in the mineral wool panels. Since I can’t really imagine doing this myself, but might save some money by doing it as a DIY task, I wanted to ask if any of you have done this before and, if so, how (for example, which tools did you use)? I should also mention that we are using square-shaped lamps.

Best regards

Are the lamps square overall or just the visible trim? Can you ask the electrician for the installation manual or find it online so the holes can be drilled accurately? Often, the holes can be round, which makes the drilling and attachments quicker and easier.

If you had everything done, including installing the electrical boxes in the concrete ceiling and fitting the fiberboards to the ceiling, then I would assign the drywall company to do it.
Otherwise, a round opening can be made very quickly with a cordless screwdriver and hole saw. If there are many holes, you might want to use a drill. These hole saw sets are available for relatively low cost.

Most holes are round, even for square or rectangular recessed lights. If not, it gets a bit more complicated. I would then use a multi-tool. (These have recently been on sale at Lidl for under 50€. It’s a good tool. I use it myself.)

Thanks for your tips. Tomorrow, I will check whether the required holes need to be round. If so, I will handle this myself, as I even have a hole saw set lying around somewhere.

I have now been informed that I will need square cutouts. My plan is for a friend (plumber) to lend me a laser device so I can mark the spots precisely parallel to the wall (using a template). At one corner, I will drill a hole with a cordless drill and then cut out the mineral fiber board with a jigsaw. I have the following question: which jigsaw blades should I use for this? The ones for wood?
