Hello, three years ago I bought an old half-timbered house (built in 1920), and this year I want to insulate the roof.
The attic will not be used as living space; it will only be insulated and used as a storage room.
Now my question:
Since there is no insulation on the roof—just roof tiles on battens and rafters—I would like to know what I need in order to start the insulation work this year?

Hello,
why do you want to insulate the attic? So your boxes don’t freeze? 🙂
No one can give you a precise plan for the construction and materials from a distance. You would need to take a closer look at the surroundings.
At the moment, you probably don’t have any moisture issues. To keep it that way, you need to consider a few things.

What about the exterior walls? Should they remain cold? Timber frame walls are not easy to insulate. Proper planning and the right choice of materials are definitely required.

How does the ceiling between floors look? Is it vapor-permeable? Is there a vapor barrier installed? If so, is it correctly connected? Warm, moist air always reaches the attic, and if you plan or execute your construction incorrectly, you will run into problems. The air needs to be able to escape somehow... very important!

So, I would reconsider the insulation first. And if it really has to be done, get a professional who can inspect everything on site and tell you how to do it.

Best regards
