Our construction company is charging about 23,000 for the painting work in our planned single-family house with 150 sqm (1,615 sq ft) of living space and a ceiling height of 2.70 m (8 ft 10 in). In the basement, only rough plastering will be done, while in the ground floor and attic, surfaces will be plastered, sanded, covered with textured paint fleece, and painted.

For financial reasons, we will probably have to do it ourselves and plan to use paint fleece instead of wallpaper.

What do you think we should budget for materials? That is, filler, joint tape, corner protectors, primer, paint fleece, and paint? About 10,000?

Thanks for your input. Oh, and how long do you think an amateur would roughly need to complete this? About 4 weeks?

I’m curious about your results and how satisfied you are.
I would never do such finishing work myself, especially if I have no experience with it.
You see this every day; I would be miserable if I had to look at it every day when it’s not done well, just because I tried to save money.

To me, having a good painter is really important. But everyone has different standards.

I have children (or more in the future) and I live in the house. Off the top of my head, I can think of five spots that have gotten damaged during the year where you’d have to do some filling...

A lot has happened here, thanks for your detailed explanations!

We are still not sure whether we can and want to do it ourselves.

We will probably get more quotes, at least for plastering, sanding, and applying fleece. We plan to do the painting ourselves. Maybe we can find someone who will do it with an invoice for under 15,000, as we don’t want to have it done unofficially... after all, if something happens on the construction site, you never know...

By the way, we have now found out that the surface area to be worked on is 850 sq meters (9,150 sq feet).

Would you try using MyHammer or contact small, local contractors directly? (We have never needed a tradesperson in our lives before.)

Ask your contractor who they would choose. Small doesn’t necessarily mean cheap or good. Efficiency is important. What use is someone charging $35 per hour if they need 140 hours, compared to someone charging $43 per hour but only needs 100 hours? For example, because they spray walls or come with three workers and complete the job faster...

We had the walls plastered in Q3 and additionally applied Knauf Finish.
Now we want to paint. Which primer would you recommend? We do not want to save on price.
Regarding the paint, we will probably use Caparol paint, which will be applied using the airless method.

Stay within the same system.
