Our construction company is charging about 23,000 for the painting work in our planned single-family house with 150 sqm (1,615 sq ft) of living space and a ceiling height of 2.70 m (8 ft 10 in). In the basement, only rough plastering will be done, while in the ground floor and attic, surfaces will be plastered, sanded, covered with textured paint fleece, and painted.

For financial reasons, we will probably have to do it ourselves and plan to use paint fleece instead of wallpaper.

What do you think we should budget for materials? That is, filler, joint tape, corner protectors, primer, paint fleece, and paint? About 10,000?

Thanks for your input. Oh, and how long do you think an amateur would roughly need to complete this? About 4 weeks?

Kuhzwei is suitable for woodchip wallpaper but too rough for non-woven wallpaper.

Oh, this is going to be a huge effort. Besides, I need to learn how to do the plastering myself first. But looking at the prices, I really can’t justify having someone else do it.

Filling and smoothing walls is tedious and not easy. Don’t have an amateur builder available who might want to earn some extra money?

I’m curious about your results and how satisfied you’ll be.
Especially for finish work like this, I would never do it myself if I didn’t have any experience, definitely not.
You see that every day—you’d want to avoid feeling frustrated if you have to look at it every day and it didn’t turn out well, just because you tried to save money.

In my opinion, a good painter is really important. But everyone has different standards.

I understand that and totally agree with you. I’m not afraid of painting either; I’ve done it myself many times before and was satisfied with the results. I’m not completely unskilled, but you have to learn everything first. If I don’t try and later see how easy it actually is, I’ll be even more frustrated about the €20,000 I could have saved.
My cousin is a pro when it comes to this kind of work—he does everything himself. Maybe he can teach me.

23,000 depending on the version and how many layers of filler are applied, is a good price. I initially wanted to do everything myself. But after a closer look, the amount of work required was such that it would have taken me another six months. Don’t underestimate this. I can only agree with the previous speaker. In the end, it’s what you see. I had all the interior painting done by a retired painter at an unbeatable price. The result is completely different from my trial room. In hindsight, I would have paid more as the difference compared to my own work was clear. Now my walls are finished at Q4 instead of Q3 and I’m satisfied—I really don’t regret the money spent.
