Our construction company is charging about 23,000 for the painting work in our planned single-family house with 150 sqm (1,615 sq ft) of living space and a ceiling height of 2.70 m (8 ft 10 in). In the basement, only rough plastering will be done, while in the ground floor and attic, surfaces will be plastered, sanded, covered with textured paint fleece, and painted.

For financial reasons, we will probably have to do it ourselves and plan to use paint fleece instead of wallpaper.

What do you think we should budget for materials? That is, filler, joint tape, corner protectors, primer, paint fleece, and paint? About 10,000?

Thanks for your input. Oh, and how long do you think an amateur would roughly need to complete this? About 4 weeks?

I just noticed that in one of the photos in your construction thread, there was a bucket of StoColor Sil Premium. Even tinted, it doesn’t cost more than 10€ per liter and should cover at least 5m² (54 ft²) even with heavier use (we used it ourselves here). But if the paint for the second coats only costs around 600€, why does the primer cost 1,400€? Is it something special for concrete?

Sorry for all the questions, but now I’m really curious.

So, I paid 16k for nearly 600 sqm (6458 sq ft) of surface area to be fully skim-coated, covered with painting fleece, and painted. The quote seems really expensive to me.

@Dr Hix
I extrapolated from a 30m² (323 sq ft) room.
In this room, the ceiling was not painted. Also, the room has walls on only 2.9 sides.
I did not include the concrete cleaner.
- Sto Prime Color: 15 liters (4 gallons) approx. €80
- Sto Color Sil Premium: 15 liters (4 gallons), factory tinted €110 (tints not done by myself; for example, in the guest room tinting caused extra costs).

The consumption was nearly 30 liters (8 gallons) of primer and 20 liters (5 gallons) of Sil Premium. That corresponds to €160 + €147. Now, if we add the ceiling (which I did not paint in this room and forgot that the consumption there is a bit higher), and simply scale this room up to 150m² (1,615 sq ft): (€160 + €147) * 5 = €1,535.
Additionally, there are 150m² (1,615 sq ft) of ceiling and quite a bit of wall area. Then you end up around €2,000.

You saved on plastering, which alone cost us 20,000. The painter then cost another 4,000 including materials.

I think a lot of labor time goes into it, which is why it’s so expensive. The materials are just a fraction of the cost, even though good paint can be quite expensive.

I bought the 10-liter (2.6 gallons) bucket from Toom for $19.99. It covered the surface on the first application.

In the basement, I used the 10-liter (2.6 gallons) one from B1 for €7.99. Same deal. However, it slightly stains if you scrape along the wall, and since it contains latex, it doesn’t repaint well.

I sprayed everything only once.

I added a teaspoon of terracotta tint to both to paint over off-white.
