ᐅ Material Costs for Painting a New Single-Family Home

Our construction company is charging about 23,000 for the painting work in our planned single-family house with 150 sqm (1,615 sq ft) of living space and a ceiling height of 2.70 m (8 ft 10 in). In the basement, only rough plastering will be done, while in the ground floor and attic, surfaces will be plastered, sanded, covered with textured paint fleece, and painted.

For financial reasons, we will probably have to do it ourselves and plan to use paint fleece instead of wallpaper.

What do you think we should budget for materials? That is, filler, joint tape, corner protectors, primer, paint fleece, and paint? About 10,000?

Thanks for your input. Oh, and how long do you think an amateur would roughly need to complete this? About 4 weeks?

Yes, correct, on the ground floor 2.70m (8 ft 10 in) and in the attic where the roof equals the ceiling, so 2.20m (7 ft 3 in) knee wall height and about 4m (13 ft) on the inside.

We’ll wait for the price for just the plastering and then get 1-2 alternative quotes. In the end, the carport might actually get painted first, or the ventilation system, which the builder said isn’t technically necessary (that’s about 12,500 gross).

Perhaps as a reference, here is our approach:

We received the building shell from the general contractor with a Q2 plaster finish. The ceilings on the ground floor (concrete) and upper floor (drywall) were unfinished and not sanded. The bathrooms were finished with lime-cement plaster.

We hired a painter through MyHammer who primed the entire house, filled and sanded the ceilings, and made the bathrooms ready for painting by filling and sanding them. After that, we only had to do the painting ourselves. The ceilings on the ground floor were additionally wallpapered with fleece wallpaper.
We paid €4,000 plus the cost of five buckets of white professional paint for our own painting work.

By the way: Our house has two full stories with 145m² (1,560 sq ft).

We were offered between €10,000 and €20,000 for 300m² (3,229 ft²) of living space about 1.5 years ago.

We did it ourselves and I can only recommend spraying. I used 15 liters (about 4 gallons) of paint per 16m² (172 ft²) room, applied in one thick coat. But this only works if the floor and doors are not yet installed. I sprayed the house alone over three weekends.

Does painting fleece offer any benefits besides crack coverage?

Or to put it another way: is there any reason not to paint the drywall board with a Q2-level skim coat directly using paint or fine textured paint? Is this common practice?
