I hope this is the right forum.

We are currently considering installing an electric sliding gate for our property. Unfortunately, I don’t have a clear overview of the manufacturers available, and I’m not even sure what the proper term for it is.

We are looking for a gate that would be installed at the end of the property and slides sideways when you approach it by car. So it would also serve as the entrance to the property.

When I google the keywords from the title, I find a few brands that I’m not familiar with. Are there any “high-quality, well-known” manufacturers here, similar to how Hörmann is known for garage doors, for example? Hörmann does have something like this, but not really for private use unless you’re into industrial design.

I would appreciate it if anyone could name one or more manufacturers.

Thank you very much and best regards
Dany

Take a look at Balu gates. Very good quality. They can fulfill almost any requirements.
For example, double-sided cladding, etc.

That looks exactly like what I was searching for.

If anyone has more information, please share...

Can someone provide a rough price estimate, maybe comparable as a price per linear meter (foot)?
I have no idea at all and don’t dare to guess anymore, especially after I was totally shocked yesterday learning that a louvered roof for a cover doesn’t cost 10,000 but rather around 30,000€ (a bit off-topic, but when it comes to the house, my sense for costs seems completely off).

So, how big should the gate be? What material? Which design?

We’re back to the classic question: how much does a car cost...

A few details would be helpful to make at least an approximate estimate 😉

You are absolutely right! Since I still lack quite a bit of knowledge about these types of gates and only started reading up on them today, I would cautiously list the following points.

  • I’m thinking metal (possibly aluminum because of the weight)
  • 4, max. 5 meters long (13, 16 feet)
  • Gate itself preferably smooth and opaque, 2 meters high (6.5 feet)

As mentioned, I don’t need an exact figure, and there will be no upper limits here, which is why I’m initially excluding any extras (doorbell, mailbox, etc.). The focus is on a quality gate that won’t cause constant problems and will last longer than 5 years 🙂.

Just going by instinct, I would estimate the cost to be around 7,000–10,000.

As far as I know, such gates must also be equipped with appropriate anti-pinch protection and a flashing light. So there is a bit more technology involved than just a drive. Don’t forget earthworks for the proper foundations and cable installation. You will also need a separate door somewhere so you don’t have to open the gate for pedestrians.

Thanks, then I didn’t have such a bad feeling about it here 🙂.

I had already suspected the issue with the foundations, which is why I started thinking about it earlier here. Cable installation will definitely be a topic as well…

Most drives for residential use already include obstacle detection and flashing lights, so no separate components are needed. For example, a Sommer drive for a gate weighing around half a metric ton should cost approximately 1000€ (about 1100 USD). The locksmith (gate builder) constructs the gate according to specifications (price varies depending on design) and installs it. This results in a custom solution tailored to your needs. The total cost should be feasible from around 5000€ (about 5500 USD), with installation taking a few hours by two people if the site is easily accessible and electricity is already available. If power supply is an issue, there are also 24V DC drives with battery backup and solar panels.
