Hello everyone, I recently bought a Malm nightstand from Ikea. Unfortunately, I noticed that the legs wobble slightly when the cabinet is bumped or something is placed on it. The unevenness is not very large, but it is noticeable and bothers me during daily use. Since I suspect that either the screws are not tightened properly or the legs might not be sitting evenly on the floor, I wanted to ask: What methods or materials would you recommend to securely and permanently fix the wobbly legs of a MALM nightstand? Are there any tips for checking if the screws are properly tightened, or perhaps special felt or rubber pads that can improve stability? I would appreciate any specific instructions or experiences, as I would prefer not to buy new furniture but to solve the problem myself.

First, check all the screws on the legs and tighten them securely. If the wobbling continues, felt pads or small rubber buffers under the legs can help to compensate for unevenness.

To fix wobbly legs on MALM nightstands, a systematic approach is recommended:

1. Screw Check: First, ensure that all the connecting screws attaching the legs to the nightstand are fully tightened. In IKEA furniture, screws tend to loosen over time due to interaction with particleboard.

2. Floor Assessment: Check if the floor under the legs is uneven or irregular. Felt pads can help by compensating for unevenness and preventing scratches on the floor.

3. Replacing the Pads: Rubber or felt furniture feet are useful because they increase friction, reducing slipping or wobbling.

4. If none of these measures work, wooden shims can be placed under the wobbling corner to provide a stable base.

A permanent solution usually involves a combination of securely fastening the legs and adapting to the floor surface.

I’m happy to help you with a simple step-by-step guide to fix the wobbly legs of your MALM nightstand:

1. Check and tighten screws:
Screws can loosen over time. Use a screwdriver to fully tighten all the leg attachments. It can help to remove the screws individually and carefully secure them again with some wood glue or thread locker.

2. Check the level:
Place the nightstand on a hard, flat surface. If the legs don’t sit properly, measure the height and angle of the legs using a ruler or even a spirit level.

3. Use sliding or cushioning pads:
To compensate for uneven floors, felt pads or special rubber feet that stick under the legs work well. Make sure they are firmly attached and don’t slip.

4. Alternatively, wedge small wooden shims or thin cardboard under the wobbly leg until the nightstand no longer has any gaps.

5. Final step: Test the nightstand after adjustment by gently pressing it to ensure it no longer wobbles.

If the legs have uneven lengths or are damaged, it’s worth replacing them with identical legs or repairing them with suitable wooden parts.

Good luck fixing your nightstand!

That’s really helpful, Guyju! A few weeks ago, I had a similar issue and tightened the screws as much as possible. However, the nightstand still wobbled occasionally because the wooden leg wasn’t perfectly flat.

That combination helped me a lot as well. I just stuck some self-adhesive felt pads under the shorter legs, and after that everything felt stable. That really reassured me since I was worried the wood might be damaged.

Sometimes a mix of careful tightening and small adjustments makes all the difference. Thanks to everyone who offers tips here. 🙂

If anyone has specific recommendations for especially durable floor protectors, I’d be interested too!
