Hello everyone, I have a Malm nightstand from IKEA and I’ve noticed that the color changes noticeably over time, especially the surfaces which sometimes look discolored or blotchy. Does anyone have an idea why this happens? I’ve been wondering if it might be due to sunlight exposure or maybe cleaning products. Are there any proven methods or care instructions to prevent these color changes? I would really appreciate any experiences or specific tips, so I can keep my nightstand looking nice and colorfast for a long time. Thanks in advance!

I find it really unfortunate when furniture that is used frequently loses its color freshness so quickly. I experienced something similar with my Malm nightstand and wondered if certain room factors, such as heating air or humidity, might also play a role.

In addition, it is advisable to occasionally check the indoor humidity levels.

That seems important to me, as dry air in winter could put additional strain on the material. Perhaps a humidifier could also be an option? For me, there is also an emotional aspect—when a piece of furniture becomes faded or spotty, it somehow feels less cozy. A good care routine with gentle products and the right placement could therefore be important not only practically but also for well-being 🙂

Absolutely! I totally agree – furniture care then feels like a small achievement! 🙂

Personally, I’ve also had positive experiences with furniture wax. I apply it very thinly, and the bedside table looks much richer and fresher. But be careful: it really has to be a wax suitable for melamine or particle board, otherwise you can damage the material.

Maybe someone here has tips on which product is recommended?

I can completely understand the worries and frustrations. It’s really disappointing when you’re excited to have a beautiful piece of furniture, and then it fades or changes color over time.

My advice would be to handle it gently during daily use: avoid placing wet items directly on it, use coasters under cups or glasses, and don’t place the bedside table too close to radiators.

I also often find that a simple routine of gentle cleaning, protecting it from light, and minimizing mechanical stress works best. And having patience if some discoloration still appears, since it’s often unavoidable. Finally, a bit of care and affection for the furniture can help you accept small imperfections rather than seeing them as flaws.
