Hello everyone, I recently purchased some furniture from the Malm series and want to protect it from scratches as best as possible. Since the surfaces are more lacquered or laminated, I’m concerned that they might be quite sensitive to everyday wear and tear from items like pens, keys, or even children’s hands.

I’m especially interested in which care products are best suited for this furniture and whether there are any specific protective measures I can take to prevent scratches or other damage without negatively affecting the appearance or feel.

Has anyone had experience with the Malm series and can offer tips on how to effectively protect this furniture from scratches? Perhaps advice on materials that can be used as a mat or protective layer, or how to clean the furniture correctly to preserve the surface?

I’m looking forward to your answers and experiences!

I find the topic of maintenance particularly important for veneered furniture like the Malm series.

One aspect I personally underestimated was "dust and abrasion." Small particles resting on the surface can cause fine scratches immediately when moving objects.

That's why I regularly clear and dust my desk surface.

Additionally, I use felt pads under all items that I move frequently. This really helps!

To preserve the beauty of the surface, I rely on special furniture care products designed for veneered finishes from well-known brands. These are usually mild and provide a light protective layer. It is also important to follow the manufacturer's instructions.

Interesting discussion here.

I once read that the films on Malm furniture can actually deteriorate when treated with certain household remedies like olive oil or furniture polish.

Strongly alkaline or acidic cleaners, as well as all solvents containing acetone, alcohol, or turpentine, are unsuitable

That sounds very important.

Maybe regular cleaning shouldn’t be done too often to avoid unnecessary wear on the surface.

Does anyone have experience with a specific furniture care spray that works really well and provides long-term protection?

Regarding care products: There are specially formulated products for laminated furniture surfaces that are water-based and leave no residue on the surface.

It is important that they are free of silicone and wax, as these substances can soften and make the laminate sticky over time.

Good examples are cleaning and care products from manufacturers such as "Frosch" or "Dr. Schutz."

An important note: Avoid home remedies like oil or vinegar, as these can cause damage or may alter the surface in the long term.

For those who prioritize the highest level of care, it is also recommended to always use a fabric underlay or custom-made protective films.

I would like to add a quick note: For anyone using Malm furniture as a desk, glass tops are a good protective option.

You can order them custom-fit, and they effectively protect the surface from scratches and stains without affecting the appearance of the furniture.

They are a bit more expensive, but definitely worth it if you want to keep the furniture looking like new for a long time.

I agree.

But be careful: glass can slip. Felt pads underneath help.
