Hello everyone, I have an Ikea Malm dresser whose drawers are increasingly squeaking, especially when I pull them out or push them in. As far as I can tell, the noise comes from the metal rails and the plastic wheels or possibly the wood itself. So far, I have tried using some oil, but that only provided a short-term fix—the squeaking returns quickly. My question is: How can I permanently stop the frequent squeaking on the Malm dresser, preferably without major disassembly or expensive special tools? Are there any proven home remedies or methods that really help in the long term? Thanks in advance for your tips and experiences!

A long-term repair actually requires not only maintenance of the running tracks but also possibly adjusting the guide elements or minimally refinishing the wooden parts. Thank you for the new perspective!
So far, I have only looked at the dresser superficially; the suggestion seems quite plausible. The drawers fit rather tightly, which I suspected was causing the noise.
How exactly would you carry out a simple adjustment on models like this without immediately risking the drawers becoming too loose or getting damaged? What tools are ideally needed? Or is sandpaper usually enough? I would appreciate any tips.

A long-term repair actually requires not only maintaining the drawer slides but also possibly adjusting the guiding elements or minimally refinishing the wooden parts. That hits the nail on the head. The drawers of the Malm chest are often very precisely made, but as you said, wood also reacts to humidity.
I recommend carefully sanding the areas where the drawer might be rubbing with fine sandpaper (grit 180 or finer). It’s best to remove a small amount of material gradually and test in between to ensure the drawer fits snugly without sticking or wobbling.
Tools: sandpaper, possibly a small wooden sanding block for better control, a few basic screwdrivers to open the drawer slides if necessary. Don’t take too many risks – go slowly and give the drawers breaks. Good luck! 🙂
