ᐅ The Malm chest of drawers no longer closes properly – what am I doing wrong?

Hello everyone,

A few weeks ago, I bought and assembled a Malm dresser from IKEA. So far, so good, but now I have a problem with one of the drawers not closing properly.

When I push the drawer in, it doesn’t sit flush with the frame; instead, it either sticks out slightly or gets jammed. I have already checked the rails for any damage and realigned the drawer according to the instructions, but there has been no improvement.

I’m wondering if I might have made a mistake during assembly or if this is a known issue with the Malm series. What tips do you have to make the drawer close smoothly again?

I use the dresser normally, without overloading it, and I haven’t placed any furniture pads or similar under it.

Thank you very much for your help!

If the sliding elements are damaged, replacing them can help – IKEA replacement parts are often available online.

Exactly! If any small plastic part is missing or worn out, you notice it immediately. I also saw a YouTube video where people treated these rollers with silicone spray, and afterwards they worked very smoothly again. Definitely give that a try!

It's really amazing how much you can get out of such a simple chest of drawers when you know how! 🙂

Keep at it!

Thanks to everyone for the many helpful tips!

I have now completely removed the drawer again and checked the sliding rails. Indeed, some screws on the cabinet were slightly loose. After tightening them, the difference was noticeable but still not perfect.

Today I will also check the plastic glides and the alignment of the rails using a protractor. The chest of drawers is standing on a level floor.

@minan: The drawer is not overloaded, rather normally filled. The plastic parts still seem to be intact, but I will take a closer look.

If it still doesn't work after that, I will get back with exact measurements.

Best regards!
