Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my IKEA Malm drawers: they keep falling completely out when pulled because the support of the sliding rails no longer seems reliable. This mainly affects the middle drawers, which have fallen out completely several times, causing inconvenience and potentially damaging the furniture parts.

I suspect that the plastic brackets holding the sliding rails in place have worn out or broken over time. Are there any tried-and-tested methods or tricks to improve the drawer support without having to replace the entire sliding rail system? Perhaps someone has alternative solutions or reinforcements that reliably prevent the drawers from falling out.

I look forward to your tips and experiences!

Hello Miben,

Regarding the issue with the Malm drawers, there are several proven approaches. Often, the plastic clip that secures the drawer slide is actually the weak point. My recommendation:

1. First, check if the clips are still intact or if they have bent. Replacement clips from IKEA are inexpensive and easy to obtain.

2. For reinforcement, small metal brackets can be installed inside to additionally prevent the drawer from coming out completely. Make sure to position them precisely so the function of the drawer slides is not affected.

3. In cases of heavy wear, self-adhesive felt pads or thin rubber strips on the guide rails can improve the locking function and prevent the drawer from falling out.

The latter, however, assumes that the drawer slides still run smoothly. If the slides are damaged, replacement is still advisable.

I hope this helps you.

That's correct. Buying replacement clips and swapping them out is usually the easiest solution.

Alternatively, if you are handy, you can use a small screw to fix the drawer to the runner.

Hello Miben and everyone interested,

I’m adding a brief step-by-step guide on how to improve the stability of Malm drawers:

1. Check the drawer slides: Pull the drawer out and inspect the slides carefully. Small cracks or distortions in the plastic parts are the main issue.

2. Get replacement parts: IKEA usually offers replacement clips and slides. It’s worthwhile to replace these if you want to restore the original condition.

3. Attach metal brackets: If replacement parts are not available, you can screw small metal brackets inside the drawer below the slides. These prevent the drawer from being pulled out too far and falling.

4. Test the secure fit: After installation, carefully test pulling the drawer out. If it still feels loose, you can add rubber strips or felt pads to the slides to increase friction.

5. Be careful during installation: Make sure the slide is properly engaged and perfectly aligned; otherwise, the drawer won’t run smoothly.

This approach combines original replacement parts with practical reinforcements and should solve the problem permanently.

Good luck!
