Hello everyone, I have noticed that the drawer handles on my Malm dressers tend to loosen over time, even though I tightened them properly. I’m wondering how to secure these handles correctly so they remain stable in the long term. Are there any special techniques or materials that should be used for this? And how can I prevent the screws from coming loose again? I look forward to your tips and experiences.

Well, to be honest, I think the issue is less about the attachment method itself and more about the material quality of these inexpensive furniture pieces. These chipboard surfaces simply don’t hold screws well. Tightening the screws won’t help if the material fails. My suggestion: rather replace the handles with ones that have a larger bearing surface or use additional washers.

I partly agree, but I would approach the problem analytically: First, you need to find out why the screws are loosening in the first place. Is it due to vibrations from opening and closing? Or because the screws are too short and therefore don’t hold properly? The type of thread can also be a factor – standard wood screws don’t grip optimally in chipboard. Self-tapping screws or special anchors might be worth considering.

Hello, here is a step-by-step guide on how to securely attach drawer handles permanently:

1. Remove the screws and check the hole – sometimes the pre-drilled holes are too large or damaged.
2. If the hole is too big, you can fill it with wood filler or wood glue, then allow it to dry completely.
3. Alternatively, you can insert small wooden dowels or toothpicks coated with wood glue into the hole, then screw in the screw after the glue has dried.
4. Use screws with a flange or washers to spread the pressure over a larger area.

It is important not to tighten the screws too much, as this can cause the material to crack or tear.

I fully agree with the advice from SUDAN. Additionally, I would like to mention that some Malm drawer handles are extendable, and the screws may loosen over time due to constant movement. If you like, a small drop of medium-strength threadlocker (not a permanent adhesive) can help prevent the screws from loosening due to minor vibrations. Just apply it to the screw and then tighten it securely.

Wood glue into the hole, toothpick inserted, let it dry, then screw in tightly. Threadlocker can also be used. This usually holds well.
