Hello everyone,
I have had a Malm bed from IKEA for some time now, and the foot area squeaks whenever I move or sit down on the bed. The squeaking is quite annoying and sometimes very loud, even though the bed still feels stable overall.
I’ve already tried tightening the screws, but without much success – the squeaking noise remains.
My guess is that some joints or the wooden slats might be rubbing against each other or are loose somewhere.
Do you have any experience with how to specifically fix squeaking noises on a Malm bed? Are there particular techniques, tools, or materials (such as lubricants) you would recommend that wouldn’t require taking the bed apart completely and reassembling it?
I would really appreciate any concrete tips, as I use the bed daily and the noise is quite bothersome.

My bedroom floor is actually not completely levelThat explains a lot. The frame construction of Malm is not very torsion-resistant, which means even small floor unevenness causes slight movement in the bed, resulting in squeaking.
Although tightening the screws is important, it often does not really solve the main problem: structural flexibility.
My advice: Attach self-adhesive, non-slip felt pads or special furniture pads (made of cork or rubber) under the bed legs for cushioning. They compensate for unevenness and reduce movement that causes the squeaking noise.
Also, when tightening the screws, it’s best to do so systematically to avoid uneven tension that can create new noises.
Thanks to everyone for the many helpful tips!
Here’s what I plan to do:
- Completely disassemble the bed to access the internal joints
- Smooth the wooden parts at the foot area with fine sandpaper
- Apply wood glue (D4) to the connection points and reassemble
- Lubricate the metal connectors with silicone spray
- Attach felt furniture pads under the feet to level the floor
I will report back on how effective each measure is. I’m especially curious if the floor unevenness trick makes much difference.
Thanks again to everyone for the perfect mix of quick tips and detailed explanations. This is what makes forums fun! 🙂
