Samuellau17 Jun 2020 10:37Hello everyone,
I recently rearranged my IKEA Malm bed, and since then it has been squeaking with every small movement. The noise seems to come from the frame or the joints, probably due to stresses that changed during transport. I assembled the bed according to the instructions, but after moving the furniture, some connections don’t seem to be fully tight anymore, or it could be the wood itself, which might have slightly warped due to the shifting.
My question: How can I specifically fix or eliminate the squeaking without having to completely disassemble the entire structure? Are there any proven tips or tools to make the bed quiet and stable again?
Thank you very much for your advice!

Since rearranging the furniture, my Malm bed squeaks with every movement. Hey, I know that annoying squeaking all too well! 😊 Often, simply tightening the screws thoroughly is enough—sometimes they tend to loosen during rearranging.
Also, applying some wax or graphite powder to the joints can help; it lubricates the friction points and quiets the noise. But be careful: don’t use oil, as it can make things greasy and attract dust.
If you notice wood cracks or slight shifts, a little furniture wax or even candle wax in the gaps can work wonders.
Good luck, and don’t worry—you’ll be sleeping quietly again soon! 😉

The squeaking probably comes from the joints or wood stresses caused by moving. Hello,
to address the problem systematically, I recommend the following steps:
1. Check screws and connections: Even if the bed is assembled, screws can loosen during transport or moving. Use a suitable screwdriver or drill to go over all the fasteners and tighten them carefully but firmly. It’s important not to overtighten, as this can damage the wood.
2. Stabilize joints with wood glue: When a joint is no longer stable enough, manufacturers often rely on screws directly into wood. In this case, adding a small drop of wood glue into the joint before tightening can improve stability.
3. Identify friction points: Squeaking often results from movement between two surfaces. You can lightly treat these areas with graphite powder or furniture wax. Alternatively, paraffin from candle wax also works.
4. Wood stresses: If the bed was subjected to stress from moving, it may have become warped. Check whether the bed sits stable when lying on it or if it wobbles. Sometimes, slightly adjusting the frame or retightening the screws helps to relieve the tension on the components.
5. Preventive measures: After the repair, regularly inspect the bed, especially since inexpensive particleboard and thin panels, like those used in the Malm series, can be sensitive to climate and load.
One more question: Was the bed completely disassembled before moving, or was it just shifted? This can influence the cause.
Best regards!

One more question: Was the bed completely disassembled when moved or just shifted? Hello Kibutar,
Thank you very much for the detailed reply! I didn’t completely disassemble the bed, just moved it from one room to another. It scraped along the wall but wasn’t taken apart.
I will definitely try your advice about tightening the screws and the idea of using wood glue if needed. Could the squeaking actually be caused by tiny micro-movements at the headboard or footboard joints?
Also, would you recommend carefully taking the bed apart briefly and then securing the screw connections again with wood glue, or is it better to first try tightening and applying wax?
Looking forward to your opinions—I want to handle it as gently as possible since I don’t want to damage it unnecessarily.

Could the squeaking come from small micro-movements at the headboard or footboard joints? This suspicion is completely valid. Especially with the Malm bed, which is based on particleboard and narrow connecting posts, even minimal movements at the joints often cause noises.
Here is a brief repair guide for a systematic approach:
1. Carefully tighten all screws (Phillips or hex key, depending on the model), not too tight to avoid crushing the wood.
2. Check if all wooden dowels are still firmly seated; loose dowels also cause squeaking. If dowels are loose, gently applying a small amount of oil or dry lubricant to these connections often helps.
3. Rub candle wax or furniture wax onto friction points where wood rubs against wood using a cloth. Be careful not to get wax on visible wood surfaces, as it may stain or look unsightly.
4. If the connections are metal brackets, check if they are fitting tightly and, if necessary, lubricate with graphite powder.
5. If possible, partially disassemble the bed for a short time and secure all threaded parts with wood glue. Keep in mind the dry time of the glue: screws should still be able to turn during assembly, but the glue will harden the connections.
In summary: You can start by tightening screws and applying wax. If the squeaking persists, I recommend carefully loosening the most critical joints (headboard and footboard), applying some wood glue, and reassembling.
I hope this helps! 🙂
