Hello everyone,
maybe someone can help me? I have a corner in the living room where I want to place a (white) bookshelf. I like the Billy with a top unit best. However, the wall is partly somewhat damp (which I have unsuccessfully tried to fix), so it would be better to use a bookshelf without a back panel, allowing air to circulate. Other shelves like Expedit, for example, don’t fit because the available corner sides are 1.30/1.20 meters (4 ft 3 in / 3 ft 11 in) – I have tried almost everything. I know that Billy definitely needs the back panel for stability, just like the Pax wardrobe requires its back panel. My thought is: can I place the Billy shelf about 2 cm (0.8 inches) away from the wall and fix it with additional angle brackets, and can I remove some sections of the back panel for ventilation so that no mold forms on the wall? What do you think, or does anyone have another idea?
Thanks in advance!

A small problem with big consequences. But...
WARNING: Please follow safety instructions, proceed at your own risk.
... go to the pharmacy, get some hydrochloric acid, and then spray it on the wall very carefully, making sure you don’t spray anything else. Let it dry thoroughly for 24 hours, then spray again. Paint over it with a special mold-resistant paint (which prevents further mold growth) and let it “dry out” for a few months while monitoring the situation.
We had the same issue. Now we have even managed to place tall cabinets without mold reappearing. Of course, we left about 5cm (2 inches) of space between the wall and the cabinets and ventilate daily for several hours in good weather. The door is now always kept closed.
Very important: If the living room is a separate room, always keep the doors closed and ventilate thoroughly when it’s warm (beware of rain or humid air, as that quickly settles in unwanted spots, and drying walls can take a very, very long time).

Really interesting topics here.
We could even start a section called "DIY and Home Care" So, what ever happened to that...

Hello,
I would strongly recommend addressing the mold issue as soon as possible, as it is extremely harmful to health. Investigate the causes thoroughly.
Regarding Billy – we also have the white one in the hallway (used as a display cabinet), and my son’s room is being expanded with it. To be precise, his room is being extended. The shelves are completely filled with his Star Wars collectibles.
As for stability – a back panel is usually very important to stabilize the unit, just like the PAX back panel does. Especially if you want to place books or something heavy inside.
I would suggest a combination of both: first, cut holes in the back panel (if the shelf isn’t intended to hold books, you could illuminate the inside from behind – and/or possibly use a printed back panel to highlight it visually)
and also use brackets (but keep in mind that this will make it harder to move the shelf later).
That’s my suggestion so far.
And I think a creative and DIY corner would be great.
