Hello
I haven’t actually forgotten the name of an IKEA product; instead, I’d like to ask the community if there is a suitable IKEA product for my needs:
I am looking for a bench about 2m (6.5 feet) long that also functions like a type of cabinet, with storage space to keep things inside. Specifically, I want to use it for collecting waste paper and empty plastic bottles.
It would be ideal if the bench can be opened from the top with a hinged lid, basically like a “storage bench.”
Does anyone have any ideas which IKEA product might be suitable for this?
Best regards

IKEA-Experte13 Apr 2015 14:47Regarding stability, I wouldn’t have major concerns unless rowdy children subject the shelf to lateral forces.
There are tall Maximeras drawers with glass side panels available. If that’s not tall enough, you can place a box inside, which is also practical for carrying out trash. You would need to test how well TROFAST, SAMLA, or other boxes fit.
The most suitable solution also depends on the desired depth of the seating surface.

The last option definitely seems to be the most stable. If you place the opening at the top and attach a flap, that should be roughly what you are looking for.
However, if you set it up as shown in the picture and use the matching baskets, there could be an issue with the bottle height. A standard 1.5 l (1.6 qt) bottle is about 35 cm (14 inches) tall.
I would therefore recommend building it yourself...

I don’t see the issue with bottle height as a big problem because I always crush the empty bottles before putting them in anyway.
What’s much more important to me is whether the design matches the other furniture in the hallway.
The Kallax might be better suited for that, but I need to take a closer look first.
