ᐅ Looking for a motorized lock or electric door opener for an automatic door

Hello,

we are planning to build a semi-detached house (construction has not started yet, only the planning phase) with a developer.

We have already chosen the front door: it is a Rodenberg aluminum door with a plastic core and a triple automatic locking system (changes might still be possible).

The automatic locking system has two bolts (top and bottom) that lock automatically and mechanically and can always be opened from the inside.
The third bolt (in the middle) can only be locked with a key, and once locked, the door cannot be opened from the inside.

We are now considering having a front door with a fingerprint scanner to increase convenience, plus a video doorbell.

I have tried to research the topic and would appreciate your help.

The fingerprint scanner should be from Ekey (as far as I understand, everyone highly recommends Ekey).
We want the fingerprint scanner externally on the video doorbell, not integrated into the door itself.

My first question is: what kind of lock do we need?

Does it have to be a (probably expensive) motorized lock, or would an electric strike for an automatic locking system be sufficient (where the mechanically locked bolts are pushed back electrically)?

Ideally, we would then be able to open the door by fingerprint and also unlock the door via an app linked to the video doorbell (we would select a compatible doorbell and lock), possibly even remotely while away.

I hope you can help me with advice regarding the door lock.

Electric strike with A-lock (which you already have) is sufficient. A motorized lock is more expensive and has the disadvantages you described.
You will use the electric strike offered to you by the supplier.

Thanks, Musketier.

Which locking system did you install in the door that is significantly cheaper than the Mediator??

What do you think of the GU Secury Automatic??

The second offer only came in last week and has not been approved yet, so it hasn’t been installed either.
The offer is also for the GU Secury Automatic with an A-opener. The only thing that still bothers me a bit is the wiring of the door. A visible wiring with a “hanging” cable connection between the door and wall/frame was offered. I would prefer it to be installed relatively invisibly in the gap between the door frame and the door leaf. That’s the downside of retrofitting instead of installing it from the start.
Although the security company also sells the Mediator, I was advised against the Mediator because we have a plastic door. A plastic door would expand too much for the Mediator and would need frequent readjustments. Since the Mediator was almost 1000 more expensive, they didn’t have to persuade me much.

I just spoke with the door manufacturer.
They will install the automatic lock with an electronic opener from Winkhaus.

I will receive the datasheets soon, but I strongly assume it is the following automatic lock with electronic opener:

Winkhaus bluematic eav3 with electronic opener

Does anyone know this lock or have experience with it?

Price is about 300€ from the door manufacturer.

What do you think the installation and wiring of this door lock by the electrician will cost, plus a video doorbell with Ekey (excluding materials from Ekey and the doorbell)? The electrician assigned to us (we are building with a developer) is currently not responding to us or other neighbors, so we can’t ask them.

Maybe ask Allthumbs. He is using Winkhaus with ekey.

Thanks for the hint, I will contact them about it.

I have another important question since the lock issue is now resolved (we can only use that one).
A proper motorized lock would cost at least 3 to 4 times as much.

Where should we place the fingerprint scanner?

In the door (in the door leaf or handle), separately on the facade next to or below the doorbell, or integrated directly into the doorbell?

With ekey, we should definitely go with ekey (it’s basically number one for fingerprint scanners), especially considering the price/performance ratio.

My first thought was to integrate the ekey into the doorbell (looks good visually) and it can be easier to replace than in the door.

But that limits the choice of doorbells significantly.

Which doorbell would you recommend with ekey?

The doorbell should have the following features:
- Send the image to two smartphones when someone rings (mine and my wife’s)
- Allow for an indoor station (we are not sure if we want this yet)
- Ability to open the door with the opener through the doorbell app or indoor station
- Option to use it remotely (we are not sure if we want this yet)
- Be secure
- Use Power over Ethernet (PoE) connection (isn’t that the best connection?)
- Definitely no paid subscription required (e.g., not paying $5 per month just to use certain functions)

How does the ekey app control the door lock?

I have already tried to research doorbells and often came across Doorbird with ekey.

What do you think of it? Are there better alternatives I might have missed?

The 2N IP Verso was also interesting, but as far as I know, it requires a subscription to use it remotely.

I was considering between Doorbird and GOLIATH/Dahua. However, the latter is not available with ekey. The former is, and there is a video comparing Doorbird’s own fingerprint scanner (called Doorbird XXXX Fingerprint 50) with the Doorbird system that includes the ekey module. In that comparison, Doorbird’s own fingerprint scanner performed quite well.

Currently, we are not yet using the Goliath scanner, so I cannot share any experience with it.

In my opinion, having an indoor unit is a must when there are children in the house. Our child is briefly home alone in the afternoons, and we don’t want them opening the door to just anyone. This is one of the main reasons why we are installing the system.

If I were you, I would definitely prefer an IP system with PoE for a new build.
