we are having a house built. Currently, we have a lot of limescale in the city water.
Are there any solutions to pre-filter the limescale from our water pipes?
Thank you

Basically, according to my research, there are two options:
1. Water softener with salt -> maintenance required in the form of refilling salt
2. Electromagnetic water descaler -> its efficiency is often questioned.
In principle, water treatment systems are connected directly after the main water supply and can be adjusted to any hardness level.

Could you give an approximate idea of the cost for a system with connection? We have 2 units, each with a living area of about 110 m² (1,184 ft²), total 220 m² (2,368 ft²). The walls have not been built yet.
Thank you

First of all, you should check the sodium level in the water supplied to your home. You can usually find this information online or by directly asking for the water quality report. Then, you can calculate how the sodium level changes if you use a “salt-based” water softener.
There are limit values that should not be exceeded because a high sodium content in the water can cause an unpleasant taste and can also be harmful to people with high blood pressure and vein diseases, especially if the tap water is used for drinking.
Generally, hard water indicates a high amount of magnesium and calcium in the water and low sodium. Soft water often contains a lot of sodium. Magnesium and calcium are responsible for the limescale that forms when water is heated. These salt-based systems exchange Mg and Ca cations for Na cations; that is why these units are also called ion exchangers.
We have such a system that reduces water hardness from 21 to 4. Even after the treatment, we are still far below the sodium limit. We also don’t notice any difference in taste since we drink our tap water.
The system itself is designed for a household, uses about 70 € of electricity per year, and consumes roughly 75–100 kg of salt, which costs about 30–50 €. Additionally, there is the annual maintenance cost of the system, which we cannot estimate yet. The first quote from the manufacturer was excessive—almost 300 €. The system’s market value is just under 2000 €. The technician who installed it even advised us to do the maintenance ourselves, as it only involves flushing a pump.
We are currently looking for a service provider to maintain both our heating system and the pump.
Regarding living comfort: I can say we will never live without it again. The myth that you no longer need to clean is false; there is still enough limescale left 🙂 However, I cannot tolerate hard water, and it caused skin irritations. For the last 13 years in Karlsruhe, I suffered after every shower. Now it is much better. Another point: we use less detergent, which is not insignificant in terms of cost.
One more note: if your water connection is in the basement and located below the wastewater outlet, you urgently need a lifting station (pump station). In addition, the softener must be equipped with an Aqua-Stop device; otherwise, your basement could flood. The manufacturer of our system charges nearly 600 € for this, which is quite steep... fortunately, we were not affected. Sellers often forget to mention this because it is a profitable additional business with few alternatives.
I hope this information helps 🙂
