Hello, with the storms going on right now, I’m wondering if it would be wise to install a backwater valve in my planned new build and a lightning conductor on the roof.

None of the future neighbors think it’s necessary.

From what I’ve seen, the backwater valve doesn’t cost much (not enough to make a big difference).

However, I can imagine a lightning conductor could be expensive.

One thing is certain: if lightning does strike, the roof structure will catch fire, leading to firefighting water damage and potentially a total loss of the house.

What are your thoughts?

How much did a backwater valve and lightning conductor cost you?

Very interesting. We also actually want to install a lightning conductor. About 2000 EUR. I’m unsure..

Apparently, no one considers it necessary since everything is grounded..

If your lowest toilet/sink/shower is positioned slightly above the next manhole cover, a flap valve does not make sense. At least not if you do not have a sealed external door, since logically water would enter here first.

An electrician once told me that a "proper" lightning protection system for a house costs much more than 2000 euros.

I was thinking around 2500-3000€.
