Good morning,

I just registered and hope I can quickly find and read your answers (if there are any)!

My partner and I are building a house, and our meeting with the architect is coming up soon.
I am really fascinated by the topic of lighting design and would love to implement some of it in our home (indirect lighting, LED strips, spotlights, etc.).
Now I’ve learned how expensive it all is (LED spotlights starting at 450 euros, if you want to install them recessed in the ceiling, etc.).
Do you have any tips on how to do this relatively inexpensively?
I think you can do a lot with affordable adhesive LED strips, right? But don’t they start to look cheap and peel off over time? Also, having cables running everywhere is a big no for me! Has anyone had experience with this?

I look forward to your answers!!

Hello, welcome to the forum,
there are already several threads on the topic of lighting design,
the search function should provide some results.
Just briefly, you should consider the different functions of lighting,
for example at the dining table,
between a cozy atmosphere for red wine, playing cards, and picking bones out of fish, the lighting should be appropriate.
Every room needs general lighting, ambient lighting, and possibly task lighting.
Think about what you want to do with light, when and where, and only then plan the lighting accordingly.

What exactly do you mean by your "lighting design"? What kind of planning is behind it? Why, how, and where would you place what?

Where did you get that information?

Of course, you can do a lot with them. But again, what is your goal?

If you move away from recessed ceiling spots because they’re too expensive and suddenly switch to LED strips, you’re dealing with a completely different lighting concept.

A concept means planning the lighting. Lighting can serve different purposes, for example: simple bright light in a hallway, accent lighting with spots for pictures or artwork, indirect lighting for a cozy atmosphere, lighting over the dining table, different light settings for watching TV, etc.
Even spotlights can follow different concepts depending on their installation location, beam angle, brightness, and color temperature.

If you want recessed lights, the first fundamental question is: suspended ceiling, yes or no?

In addition to the different types of lighting fixtures, it is important to choose the appropriate color temperature for each application. The color rendering index should also not be overlooked for specific areas.

Spotlights are outdated and too expensive. Look into LED panels or other types of lighting. Fixtures with E27/E14 sockets are more sustainable, as the smart technology is built into the bulbs.

Your own motives are the most important here, followed by your own definition of what a "concept" should actually mean. Thanks to affordable house design software, there are plenty of eager entrepreneurs who use the grand term "lighting design" but often only end up creating lamp shopping lists with computer animations (and there’s an endless variety of other semi-useful things for which people design fancy business cards).
