Hello,

I have some general questions about light well covers and hope this is the right place to ask.

What exactly is the purpose of these covers?
Are they mainly to prevent light wells from being "flooded" from above during heavy rain?
My light wells have a hole in the middle, so they should be connected to the drainage system.

The basement windows in my house are old metal ones. Could the cover also help prevent heavy rainwater from pressing against the house wall and finding its way into the basement through the window?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Best regards,
Dimi

I only have limited knowledge about this, but I know that just having a hole does not necessarily mean it is connected to the drainage system. So you would need to check whether water actually drains away or not.

Good luck

Hello,
yes, water definitely drains away, but it is difficult to say where exactly.

Does anyone else perhaps have an idea what function the light well covers are supposed to serve?

You mean made of glass? Only in terms of keeping out the rain.

Yes, exactly, the ones made of glass.
Is it because the windows are not waterproof or for some other reason?
I don’t get the impression that they provide much protection, yet you still often see these on older houses.

Driving rain is already being kept out, generally quite a bit – it does not need to be waterproof against pressurized water (especially if there are only metal windows).
