ᐅ Light Wells – Are They Worthwhile? Options, Costs, Examples, Spacing...

So far, I have not found a general discussion thread about light wells. Here are some questions I have:

1. How much light does a light well actually provide? For example, can it be replaced by two or three light shafts if that is cheaper?

2. What costs should be expected in southern Germany for a simple light well with gravel and basic concrete or natural stones for securing it?

3. How should a light well be protected against heavy rainfall or flooding? Water drainage (cleaning issues if leaves, etc. get inside), backflow preventer, and similar measures.

4. What would be a suitable size (width, height) for a basement window for a light well? What are the costs?

That must be a window you can climb out of (using a ladder?), right?

According to our regional building regulations, windows must have a clear dimension of at least 0.90 x 1.20 m (35 x 47 inches) and be installed no higher than 1.20 m (47 inches) above the finished floor level. If the window is located in a light well, there must be a safe means of escape (logically, the cover or grate must also be easily removable). However, it’s best to check your local building regulations to see what is required in your area.

I can’t comment on the cost of light bands or light tubes, as we chose a light well. Our window complies with the required 3 m (10 feet) setback from the property boundary.

And finally: How much space does a light well need? For example, is 4m (13 feet) from the neighbor enough if the basement isn’t raised, meaning it’s fully below ground?
Are you allowed to build light wells up to the property line? And would it bother you if you couldn’t walk properly past that spot anymore?
If we assume a depth of 2m (6.5 feet), then 4m (13 feet) length shouldn’t be too steep.
And what is located on the neighboring property beyond those 4 meters? If there’s a garage there, it will probably be quite dark down below.

If the garage is there, it will be quite dark downstairs on the right side.
Oh, that’s definitely important to consider. There will be a driveway and then the house 3 meters (10 feet) further in. It’s tricky with the light when there are houses on both sides and you need the space for the terrace on the garden side...
