Hello everyone,

A few months ago, we received our building permit / planning permission. Just the day before yesterday, we got a letter from the accident insurance institution (BG) asking us to provide a list of which companies will be responsible for what work.

Since we will be doing a lot of the work ourselves and will also be hiring the companies directly, we are still in the process of collecting quotes. We have NOT started construction yet and won’t begin before March 2018 at the earliest. We have also not awarded any contracts yet because we are still waiting for some comparative offers.

Can someone advise me on what we should fill out now if we don’t have anything confirmed?
Do we need to include the total construction costs including additional construction expenses, or without them?
Do siblings and parents have to be listed as helpers as well?

Just give them a call and explain the situation.
The BG Bau will put it on hold and follow up when construction actually starts.

I would send it back without any entries, noting that construction work hasn’t started yet.

You will receive this form repeatedly over the coming months. Each time, you fill in the trades that have been completed by then. The rest remains blank.

The issue with construction helpers is a bit complicated.
See the information sheet for details.

Siblings and parents must be listed—and thus insured—if they are involved extensively. The tricky part is: if something happens to one of your family members, the construction accident insurance will refuse liability, claiming it was voluntary help. So you are required to pay insurance for relatives but won’t receive any benefits in case of an accident. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that nothing happens.

If you plan to do a lot of work yourself, you should include at least about one thousand in your budget for construction accident insurance.

If your family is really involved a lot, it might make sense to take out a suitable personal liability insurance. It doesn’t cost much but can be extremely helpful in case something happens.

And be precise when listing the steps. They will notice if you’re being careless.

The BG is really a unique organization! I know two cases from the green forum where there were court proceedings, and in both cases, contributions were paid for helpers, but after the accident, they refused to pay because of family circumstances.

Unfortunately, one of these cases was fatal, and in the other, the son had "only" a finger amputated.
