Hello,
my wife and I are about to start repaying a single-family house built with clay block prefab elements, and we are now approaching the detailed planning stage. Since the empty conduits and sockets will be cast into the wall at the factory, we already need to decide on the exact positions of almost all switches, light sources, etc. The straight cantilever stairway from the ground floor to the upper floor will be mounted on a 20cm (8 inches) thick reinforced concrete wall, which is to remain unplastered on this side. Along the staircase, we would like to have 4-5 recessed spotlights that provide indirect lighting for the steps.
So far, no problem, but: the spotlights should be positioned exactly above a step or exactly between two steps. The staircase itself will only be installed after the wall is completed (oh well…). However, if the positions and thus the risers of the recessed spotlights are fixed in advance—because they are cast in at the factory—it may be problematic to install the stair treads so that everything aligns perfectly.
I have come up with a solution for which I would appreciate your professional feedback:
Once the staircase is installed, holes will be drilled through the wall at the chosen spotlight positions from the stair side. The wiring of the spotlights and any chasing of the wall can then be done from the backside of this wall without damaging the front side. This way, no empty boxes would need to be reserved during wall casting whose position might not match the stairs.
Could this work? Or am I missing something? Do you know a better solution?

No objections? Then I will give it a try this way.

my wife and I will soon start paying off a detached house built with lightweight clay precast elements, and we are now close to the final construction planning. No problem so far, but: The spotlights should be exactly above a step or precisely between two steps. The staircase will only be installed after the wall is completed (oh joy...). But if the positions and thus the height of the recessed spotlights are fixed—because they are cast in at the factory—it may be tricky to install the stair treads afterward so that everything fits properly.
I have now come up with a solution that I would like to get your professional feedback on:
Once the staircase is hanging, holes would be drilled through the wall from the stair side at the chosen spotlight positions. The wiring for the spotlights and the chipping out of the wall could then take place on the back side of this wall without damaging the front. This way, no empty boxes would need to be included when casting the wall, whose position might not match the staircase later.
Could this work? Or am I missing something? Do you know a better solution?

Hello,

congratulations on your new financial commitment ;-)

My professional advice is only partial, as I am neither an electrician nor a mason, just a planner. I would recommend determining the exact location of the recessed spotlights, selecting the exact fixture you want to install, and making sure there is a suitable housing for it that can be installed. This housing should then be installed by the masons when they are pouring the concrete. It is also important to consider where the empty conduits (for electrical cables) will run.

Retrofitting this in exposed concrete is rarely a good idea ;-(

Good luck,

We had considered that as well... and for exactly that reason rejected it again. Afterwards, you have to fill the holes because the steps don’t fit exactly, and then? Wasted money...

Ok, thanks for the opinions. I'll hold off for now and, in the meantime, consider indirect lighting for the wall instead of recessed spotlights on the ceiling above the staircase.
