Hello forum, in the ceiling of the new house there are halogen spotlights. The entire wiring is not visible. Behind each spotlight, however, there is a transformer (see picture). Two cables come out of the ceiling at each transformer, each serving as neutral (N) and live (L) – on the other side, the spotlight is connected. If I want to replace the halogen spotlights with LED spotlights, what would I need to do? Is this even possible when only the cables at the openings are visible, or could there be additional electrical installations behind the suspended ceiling that I should be aware of? Can I simply use 220V LED bulbs with the same base and connect them directly to the cables coming from the ceiling?

Knallkörper6 Jul 2017 10:06Hmm, I don’t see any technical flaw there. I have over 80 spots with 230 V LED bulbs in my house. My wall lamps, stair lighting, and outdoor lighting are also LED and without a transformer.
Regarding the topic: GU5.3 sockets are usually designed for 12 V bulbs. GU10 sockets are typically for 230 V bulbs. The sockets shown in the picture cannot be used for 230 V bulbs.
Both GU5.3 and GU10 bulbs are available with MR16 reflectors (50 mm (2 inches) casing) and can sometimes be swapped. GU5.3 bulbs also come with MR11 reflectors, which are a bit smaller (35 mm (1.4 inches) casing).
Here’s what I would do: remove the transformer, connect a GU10 socket to the cable (99 cents on Amazon), and insert a 230 V LED bulb (e.g., LEDON) there. If you previously had 50 mm (2 inches) halogen spotlights, the LED bulbs will fit the old sockets.

However, there are a few models with quite decent housings that look discreet. Without flashy elements or adjustable heads, they can be acceptable.
