Hello everyone,

About 10 years ago, we built a house and had a regular terrace installed with granite slabs. Now we want to replace the granite slabs with wood-look patio tiles measuring 120x40x2cm (47x16x0.8 inches).

A year ago, we converted the terrace into a cold conservatory, so rain or slope (which we don’t have) is not an issue.

I have since checked the base and found the following:
- The top six centimeters (2.4 inches) consist of a mix of sand and cement, but the surface is not very hard (I was able to make a hole easily with a chisel and hammer / it’s rather crumbly).
- Underneath this layer, there should be about 30–40 cm (12–16 inches) of compacted sand (we needed to level the ground around the house, and sand was used for this).

My question is how the foundation should be prepared, considering that the current height definitely needs to be raised by 4 cm (1.6 inches) because the sliding door tracks should be at the same level as the patio tiles.

In general, I want to do the project myself and would really appreciate any tips you could share.

Thank you very much and best regards,
Thomas

I would first pour a concrete slab for the terrace and then lay the new paving slabs on top. This helps prevent sinking and unevenness, among other issues. That’s how I did it at a house and found it excellent. Since the area is essentially already prepared, in my opinion, this would be a manageable effort and make the installation easier afterward.

Should the old substrate be removed (at least partially)? What material should be used for the "filling"? Drainage mortar, screed concrete, flowing screed, leveling compound...?

Hi, I mixed fast-setting concrete with decorative gravel for my pool, dampened it, and laid slabs on top. It’s solidly set. Then I installed the tiles.

Thanks a lot!

Did you use 2cm (0.8 inch) thick slabs? Did you apply any flexible adhesive or bonding slurry to the slabs?
