Hello Forum
Attached is our drainage plan.
Approximately 42m (138 feet) need to be excavated,
about 25m (82 feet) of main sewer pipe for wastewater has to be installed,
and about 41m (135 feet) of main pipe for rainwater drainage.
I have now received a fixed price quote. The company charges 900€ for this work, including the tightness test.
I wanted to do a rough calculation:
In total, I need about 66m (217 feet) of PVC main pipe with an internal diameter of 125mm (5 inches). One meter costs roughly 4.50€.
That comes to approximately 300€. Adding seals, branches, and bends, I’m estimating around 350€.
That leaves 550€ for excavation, pipe laying, and backfilling. What do you think, is that reasonable? To put it this way, if it should be possible to complete this work in one day—starting at 7:00 a.m. and finishing at 5:00 p.m.—I find an hourly labor rate of 55€/h a bit high, or am I mistaken?
Best regards

That comes to around €300. Adding seals, branches, and bends, let's estimate it at €350.

I can’t make much sense of that answer.
Why can’t you make sense of it?
You can’t simply calculate €4.50 per linear meter if the excavator must include his equipment costs along with his labor per meter.
If you own such equipment yourself, then you can indeed only calculate the purchase price, but in tradespeople’s estimates, their machines and equipment are always factored in.
And as mentioned above, €900 is very low.
A concrete example: our cost for laying one linear meter of 100mm (4 inch) drainage pipe was €34.50, plus the connection work and pressure test, each about €200.
And if a self-employed worker charges €55 per hour, they usually keep only about half of that after deducting all expenses.
By now, this should be clear to everyone.
No, you don’t understand!
1. Calculations are handled differently than what you presented (and questioned) in #1.
2. You can figure it out yourself, since your calculation results in a tight €8 per running meter.
It’s frankly embarrassing that someone might still ask whether this is a bit too high or excessive.
I assume there is a mistake, missing items, or someone indulging in an excavator hobby.
