Hello everyone!

We have decided to install the tongue-and-groove boards on our attic floor ourselves. Our joists are spaced 78cm (31 inches) from center to center.

Now I am wondering... Do the boards need to meet end-to-end directly on a joist? Or does it not matter if I stagger the boards randomly, with the ends overlapping 30cm (12 inches) beyond the joists?

I plan to use 23mm or 27mm (about 1 inch) thick tongue-and-groove boards.

How have you handled this?

Thanks for your opinions.
I will join the joints onto the beam.
I will measure to determine the length I need to order, so that I have as little waste as possible...

I’ll join in here. Tongue and groove boards are probably the better option for the attic, rather than OSB panels?

Does anyone have a tip on where to get them cheaply (possibly online)? Or what’s considered affordable and what price range should I expect?

Thanks!

And another person joining in.

Can tongue-and-groove boards also be used as counter battens? Or is something else recommended for that?

Good luck

For counter battens, the cheapest shuttering boards are sufficient.
Tongue and groove boards can also be purchased locally at the building materials or timber supplier. Shipping costs for online orders are too high. I recently paid around 1 EUR (about 1.10 USD) per meter including tax, delivered free to the house. Bought 240 meters. 240 meters cost 225 EUR (about 247 USD).
