Hello everyone,

We are currently working on creating a small path around our new build. It will be a path 1.30 m (4 feet 3 inches) wide, filled with stones and fitted with stepping slabs. Below that is 40 cm (16 inches) of compacted frost protection gravel.

My question is whether it is possible to lay a studded membrane with a width of 1.30 m (4 feet 3 inches) between the stones and the frost protection gravel to prevent weed growth? Quite a lot of weeds have already started growing by now.
I’ve attached a picture I found online. This is roughly how we want it to look.

Regards,
Michael

Weed control fabric!

What are the disadvantages of using a dimple membrane? I have often used weed control fabric, but unfortunately it has not helped in the long term.

For example, water can’t drain properly and moss or similar growth will appear. Ultimately, instead of a dimpled membrane, you could also lay plastic sheeting underneath, since the goal is to prevent weed growth. Even if you pour concrete and then fill it with stones on top, something will eventually grow in the bed.

What kind of weed control fabric? Use thick geotextile fabric, then nothing will grow through it.

Under the gravel-covered area with slabs, we have geotextile fabric. Since organic material is deposited from above, some plants eventually grow, but they can be easily removed by hand. Our area is almost four years old. If we were to decide on the design again, I would recommend low-growing ground cover plants between the slabs that do not require mowing. These areas are not heavily used.

Geotextile weed barrier protects only from underneath. Weeds coming from above still need to be removed by hand. However, they come out more easily if you don’t wait for years.

A drainage membrane regularly turns the path into a pond, but plants still grow from above.
