ᐅ Lawn installation in autumn or spring with deciduous trees

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a complete lawn renovation (including irrigation, a robotic mower, etc.). This means fully digging up the area, leveling it, possibly adding new topsoil—basically the whole process.

Originally, the groundwork was supposed to be done in August, with seeding planned for early to mid-September, but the timing didn’t work out.

Now I’m considering whether to do it at the end of September or wait until mid-April. Currently, there is a “weed lawn” that looks fairly decent and mostly prevents walking through mud everywhere. Additionally, there are several large deciduous trees on the property that will shed their leaves in the fall.

Therefore, I’m leaning toward spring, but the advice that it’s best to sow grass seed in the fall still makes me hesitate. What are your experiences?

Best regards

Basically, it is usually sufficient to mow and level briefly (whether to use sand or topsoil depends on how heavy the soil is). This is called the sandwich technique and works well. I have used this method in several places and it has worked very effectively. The result improves even more if you scarify at the deepest setting…

Regarding the original question: so, better to wait until spring?

Well, that’s a bet on the weather... if you expect a mild, wet, and warm winter: autumn. However, in my opinion, I would wait for spring...

If you do not choose to use turf, I would not do it in autumn. Sow again in spring. Then mow, fertilize, water, and keep this up regularly. Change the blades frequently on the robot mower.

Then reseed again in spring...

Two no's make the following statement: So if sowing, then spring? 😉
So if sowing: sow in spring and overseed in early summer?

It should say "still in autumn." Then sow again in spring.
