Hello everyone,
we are planning to install a walkway of about 40 m² (430 sq ft) with large granite paving stones in the courtyard and garden. For the edging, the typical size of 15/17 cm (6/7 inches) is planned. However, for the main area, we would prefer to use halved stones—approximately 8 cm (3 inches) high—to save material. The installation will be done in a herringbone pattern. Although the path partially borders the asphalt in front of the garages, it generally will not be driven on by cars.

Has anyone had experience with halved large paving stones?
Are there any significant disadvantages? Structurally, halved large stones shouldn’t be much weaker than smaller cobblestones with 8/10 cm (3/4 inches) thickness, right? Concrete pavers usually have a thickness of 8 cm (3 inches) anyway.

We have experience with concrete pavers and edging made of large granite stones, but unfortunately not with large-area natural stone paving yet. That’s why we are thinking of “simpler” large stones in a herringbone pattern without an elaborate design. We will inquire with the quarry about saw-cut and blasted finishes on the stone surface.
