we are planning a staircase with a landing in our new build with a total width of 2.175 m (7 ft 2 in) and a tread width of 1 m (3 ft 3 in) on each side. We recently visited the kitchen studio to create a layout, and for this type of kitchen (with a crosswise positioned island), the kitchen could use a few extra centimeters in width (width 3.26 m (10 ft 8 in)).
Now I’m trying to find a few centimeters somewhere and came back to the staircase.
Does it make sense to reduce each tread width to 95 cm (37 inches) or should the 1 m (3 ft 3 in) tread width definitely be kept?
How wide are your staircases with landings, meaning the tread width?

To install a kitchen island with a minimum width of 100cm (40 inches), you need a room width of at least 340cm (134 inches) – and even then, it will be very tight! It only really works well with room widths over 350cm (138 inches). The space saved by the staircase would definitely not be enough – especially since those are probably rough construction measurements for you, and you still need to account for several centimeters for plastering and so on.
