I want to treat myself to a barrel sauna for Christmas and have already chosen the model. It will likely be an outdoor barrel sauna about 3 meters (10 feet) long, made from Canadian red cedar.

It comes as a kit and without a heater.

Now I would like to buy a suitable combo heater for both heat and steam (bio sauna), but I have no experience with sauna heaters. Until now, I’ve always just used saunas operated by others ;-)

I would like a simple control system that is preferably remote-controllable (so I can preheat the sauna, for example, from my office).

The sauna has an interior volume of about 7.5 m³ (265 cubic feet) (approximately 2.4 m (8 feet) long inside, diameter just under 2 m (6.5 feet)), so I thought a 6 kW heater would be enough? What are your opinions on this?

The sauna will be placed on a small terrace made of ceramic tiles, plus there will be a path made from the same tiles so I can walk from the sauna to the terrace (and then to the house) without getting my feet wet.

The manufacturer says additional covering for the sauna is not necessary but definitely useful. The usual bitumen shingles look extremely unattractive to me, and besides a small pitched roof as an alternative, I don’t have any good ideas :-( (and I also find a pitched roof visually unsuitable for a barrel sauna).

Does anyone have a nice idea for this?

:-) You are free to order a little barrel like that anytime. But of course, please include pictures then.

I still need to work on (or have someone work on) the exterior design and the privacy screening in front of the door. I can handle other things and know my design limits quite well ;-)

Does anyone have ideas for a smart sound system that is suitable for built-in installation and sauna use? I would also appreciate information on stylish lighting, possibly color-adjustable or programmable, ideally accompanied by example pictures ;-)

I can still run cables under the upcoming roof for this...

Best regards

In a sauna that we visit regularly, the attendants bring these portable loudspeakers and control them via smartphone/smartwatch. At least the steam infusions seem to withstand this without any issues.

It turned out pretty cool. The neighborhood isn’t very private, though. What plans do you have there?

Well, the bathrobe is hanging right outside the door. And I’m quite tolerant about who gets to see me naked ;-) Most of the neighbors have already been curious enough to take a look, and some also want to use the sauna occasionally...

However, I’m open to design suggestions and still have some budget left. Next to the sauna, there will probably be a barrel with cold water (and later a garden shower). As soon as possible, I will also plant more hedges at the front (using larger plants right away).

Yes, during my last sauna visit, a guest brought something like that. But he turned it off as soon as I went inside; before that, he was alone... However, I would prefer to have something permanently installed, ideally with internet radio and voice control (which I already use at home in the bathroom and in my office/workshop).

I would also like controllable LED panels (or strips under the benches?) for mood lighting, similar to what I saw in a BIO sauna before. There, several LED panels on the ceiling and one wall slowly changed colors for relaxation.

By the way, the roof definitely needs to be installed; it’s not watertight as is. I no longer want the curved corrugated sheet metal; I actually prefer curved standing seam sheet metal. If it’s reasonably affordable (my budget is around 1500 for the roof), I will choose something like that in aluminum, white or gray-white. Copper will probably be too expensive, though it would be fantastic. Starting tomorrow, I will inquire whether a local roofer can do this, otherwise it will be custom ordered.
