Hello,

Since we moved in during autumn 2022, we've been hearing dull knocking or tapping sounds coming from the south-facing roof above our bedrooms. The noises increase with sunlight but also occur on cloudy days with moderate temperatures. In the evenings, well after sunset, the sounds happen quite regularly (4-6 times per hour), occasionally also during the night. Usually, it’s a single "dong," like someone is throwing a tennis ball onto the attic floor. There are 12 photovoltaic modules installed on the south roof. These have been rebuilt three times to rule out issues related to thermal expansion. After the last installation, there was a quiet period of two weeks, then the daily noises resumed. I have already turned off the ventilation system, and animals can be ruled out. The attic floor is covered with 18 mm (0.7 inch) OSB boards, making it accessible as storage space. Are these types of noises occurring this frequently still normal and possibly related to the settling behavior of the wooden roof structure (constructed in April 2022)? I lack experience in this area. The building is a KfW55 standard timber frame construction.

Roof construction:

Light gray tiles
Battens 40 mm by 60 mm (1.6 inch by 2.4 inch)
Counter battens 48 mm by 70 mm (1.9 inch by 2.8 inch)
Underlay membrane
Glued laminated timber
Mineral insulation with WLG035 (thermal conductivity class 0.035)
Moisture protection
Counter battens
Battens

I would greatly appreciate your assessment and help.
