Hello everyone,

I would appreciate some critical feedback on my kitchen layout.
Attached are rendered images and the floor plan of the living and dining area.

The goal was a modern kitchen without a high-end focus for a two-person household.
The color is light gray and the countertop is matte granite in a cloudy anthracite tone.
I definitely want to keep my side-by-side refrigerator, even though the next one will probably be a French door model.
The dishwasher is located in the lower left under the oven (which includes a steam function).

The island measures 2.00 x 1.00 meters (6 ft 7 in x 3 ft 3 in). The distance between the kitchen row and the island is about 1 meter (3 ft 3 in).
The initial design sketch showed a wider island, but we adjusted it on site because it would have been too bulky.

When I wash and cut vegetables, I need the sink for that, otherwise I would constantly have to carry the dripping wet vegetables back and forth between the sink and the kitchen island.

Everyone has different workflows. Especially when planning a kitchen, it is extremely helpful to carefully consider what is unnecessary, what is missing, and what can be improved while working in the existing kitchen. For example, I am looking forward to a larger sink to wash bigger vegetables like Swiss chard without flooding everything. However, I usually clean and cut vegetables while sitting at the kitchen table.

Everyone has their own preferred routines – in my opinion, it would be wrong to impose your own concept on others. It’s something each person has to decide for themselves. For that reason, I also think it’s wrong to adopt someone else’s concept unquestioningly—whether it comes from the kitchen designer or from Instagram.

As already suggested, I would also turn the island into a peninsula to create more workspace and storage. In your design, the available workspace is very limited. Whether to place the sink or the cooktop on the island (or both) depends on how you “socialize” while working in the kitchen. For us, cooking is the social activity, while others focus on washing up after meals. We do most of our chopping near the cooktop, others prefer the sink area. For us, the cooktop-on-island setup works well; I wouldn’t change it.

Another effective feature is an 80 cm (31.5 inches) deep kitchen counter with shelving behind the sink. This would extend your kitchen 20 cm (8 inches) further into the living area.

Regarding the distance between the kitchen and the island, we manage very well with 1.15 m (45 inches) — no one gets in the way. However, we don’t have a dishwasher that would block the path when open.
