Hello everyone,

Following advice from our architect, we have started considering our kitchen layout, since we still have the option to move walls, windows, or doors if it helps optimize the kitchen.

Attached is a first draft of the kitchen plan, which I have roughly sketched. You will also find pictures showing the approximate style and cabinet fronts we are aiming for. According to the seller, the price will be around €13,500. Some additional information is included in the image. If you need any more details, please feel free to ask.

What do you think about the Nolte Manhattan kitchen in general? How do you find the overall layout? Does the offer seem reasonable to you? Do you have any suggestions for improvements?

Thank you very much and best regards

I also find that doesn’t necessarily reflect well on the kitchen showroom. $13,500 is very cheap nowadays for a Nolte kitchen of that size. A reputable kitchen studio will at least provide you with some pictures of the design. We also received all the exact model names of our electrical appliances upon request. We chose them during the consultation based on brand and functionality.

We visited two studios, both of which I would unreservedly recommend. When it came to planning images, both were rather reserved. However, as Kati mentioned, we were able to specify exact models and write them down. One studio even provided us with precise prices, although that is usually not possible. At €13,500 (about $14,500), these are probably not super-premium appliances with every possible feature, but you should at least know what you’re getting. If the planner doesn’t want to give you that information, make sure to note down the model numbers of each appliance and check for yourself.

Just be aware that this price is on the lower end for a new build, so there must be a reason for it. If you mostly use the oven for frozen pizza or occasional gratin dishes with cheese, there’s no need to spend several thousand dollars. But if your kitchen features all swing-door cabinets, skimping there is the wrong place to cut costs. That really limits your options.

Am I the only one who finds the price suspiciously low by today’s standards? Nolte is usually more expensive than Nobilia, right?
We are paying €20,800 (about $22,000) for our Nobilia kitchen (L-shaped + island). We compared prices between three kitchen showrooms, so this is not from an expensive retailer.
I calculated the cost of the electrical appliances based on the model numbers (Bora PUXU, oven, refrigerator, two dishwashers, all from Miele but not the most expensive models). The appliances, sockets, and sink probably make up about half of the price. The rest is for the cabinets.
So if we end up paying around €10,000–12,000 (about $11,000–13,000) for the cabinets, how can they offer you a quote of €13,500 (about $14,000) from a higher-end manufacturer including appliances?

I also think that doesn’t really speak in favor of the kitchen studio.
Why not? Since many people spend just two hours planning a kitchen and then never come back, I can partly understand the industry’s approach.

The fact that the kitchen studio doesn’t provide you with pictures or the kitchen design itself basically shows a lack of transparency.

I would only provide that information with a contract. It would be ideal if the industry simply charged a planning fee, provided the drawings, and then credited those costs when the kitchen is purchased or ordered. That would be a win-win situation for both parties.

Nolte is quite a bit more expensive than Nobilia, isn’t it?
Nolte often has promotions, and besides the corner carousel and towel cabinet, there aren’t many noteworthy furnishings here. Basically, just bare cabinets.

So if we end up around 10-12k for the furniture, how can they offer you a quote of 13.5k from a higher-end manufacturer including appliances?

For a base cabinet, the difference between hinged doors and three pull-outs can easily be around 400-600 € (450-675 USD). So there is still a lot of room there. For the appliances, I would also expect that depending on the model selection, you could end up around 5-6000 € (5600-6750 USD). I wouldn’t necessarily rank Nolte as more expensive than Nobilia. Overall, it’s tight, but I think it’s possible.

Based on the description, I also suspect a row of base cabinets with doors and a drawer, rather than pull-out drawers, which are much more practical for storage than base cabinets with doors. With the kitchen size described, you could easily do without the corner carousel (you probably should! 😉 ).
