Hello everyone,

the shell construction of our house is progressing. The structural requirements are set, so only minor adjustments to the details would still be possible.

Notes:
1. The pantry cabinet on the far left in the appliance wall will be 40cm (16 inches) wide instead of 30cm (12 inches).
2. Unfortunately, the support beam is necessary; it will be boxed in within the kitchen area and will serve visually as a separation between the dining area and the living/lounge area (on the left side of the plan).
3. In case it’s not clear: the dishwasher is located under the coffee machine.
3. The plan is oriented to true north, with the terrace shown at the bottom of the plan.

What do you think? Have we missed anything important or planned anything suboptimally?

Thanks and best regards

Hello,

I’ll start by sharing my thoughts:

- With handleless cabinets, a side-by-side fridge, a kitchen island, and a breakfast bar, pretty much all the typical clichés are there, which makes optimal planning more difficult. The only things missing are a carousel and a pantry. 😉

- I find a pantry cabinet with 30cm (12 inches) depth quite challenging. Does it at least have pull-out shelves?
We have a 30cm (12 inches) wide cabinet at the end of the wardrobe wall in the dressing room. We use it with pull-out boxes; otherwise, you’d have to unload almost the entire shelf to get something from the back.
This is a result of the wide side-by-side refrigerator.

- A raised dishwasher is nice, but if it’s placed right next to the sink run, it’s rather inconvenient. Be prepared to regularly clean the front of the sink area, because water splashes will occur when loading and unloading the dishwasher.

- Do you really want the end panels on the island and the cabinet wall as shown? The island panels can usually be notched out, and I could imagine the same for the cabinet wall. Otherwise, you end up with lots of corners on the floor where dirt will collect.

- Overall, I find the cabinet wall visually too busy.
Having two ovens, a drawer, a side-by-side fridge, and a coffee machine means too many appliances are visible. Add to that the end panels between the individual units, which are probably necessary around the side-by-side fridge.

- I would think carefully about the glass doors under the breakfast bar—one accidental kick and the glass could break.

- Because of the breakfast bar, the front row of storage is only limitedly accessible. Although you have cabinets with 60cm (24 inches) depth, the ones facing the breakfast bar MUST have hinged doors. That will be a crawling exercise if you need to reach something from behind.

- If I’m reading the sink run correctly, you have drawers configured in a 5-module height system? (Or maybe even only 4?) The layout 1-1-2(3) (one drawer - one drawer - one pull-out with double or triple height) offers very little storage space. The deeper double or triple pull-outs are quite tall and hard to use efficiently.
It would be interesting to see how the cooktop side of the island is arranged.

- Overall, considering all these points, the kitchen provides relatively little storage space for its size.

At first, I also really wanted a side-by-side fridge, but I gave up on it for exactly these reasons.
It’s very hard to integrate when space is limited.
I strongly recommend reconsidering this. Instead, we installed two separate appliances in the cabinet wall. The result (see attachment) is more space than in a side-by-side fridge, it’s more organized, and I don’t have an ice dispenser.
I’m not trying to push you, but sometimes it’s worth rethinking these fixed points. I even initially planned the house around the side-by-side fridge. 😀

Sorry if this sounds strict, but I definitely wouldn’t want the kitchen as it is—it would be too impractical at every turn for me.
@kbt09 can probably give you some tips as well.

We also implemented a few things that not everyone might like. It’s enough that we’re happy with them. ;-)

As a tip, since these have proven very useful for us in a short time, I’d suggest the following:
- A pull-out trash bin directly under the countertop is great! Open the drawer, slide in the food waste, wipe it clean, done. Think about whether you want and can fit one that’s 30cm (12 inches) or better yet 40cm (16 inches) wide.
- I don’t regret having a hinged door by the sink at all. Without the often-used pull-out trash bin, there’s room for larger waste containers for recyclables like yellow bag waste and paper inside the cabinet. If something spills, you don’t have to awkwardly lean over the pull-out panel or whatever it’s called.
- Our distance between the countertop run and the island is about 1.2m (4 feet). The sink and stove are positioned so I can easily step between them in just two steps. We can work comfortably together and still have drawers open. Only when two opposite drawers are open at the same time does it get a bit tight. If the gap were only 1m (3 feet), we’d probably get in each other’s way.
- We have one drawer and below it two pull-outs of equal height. I’m very satisfied with the space and height, except that my vinegar and oil bottles don’t fit in the height available there, which was unplanned. They’re now stored in the wall cabinet above the sink, which actually works better—no bending down and close to the countertop where I prepare salads.

In that spirit: based on your floor plan, already think about where you want to store what and whether the drawer dimensions fit. Those very tall base pull-outs tend to be a waste of space since most people don’t have that many tall items. :-)

hm... taste is subjective, but I would also advise against display cabinet doors at the base level.
Otherwise, the cabinet surface looks too busy to me. No symmetry, and with the 40cm (16 inches) unit on the left it appears cramped. I prefer a calm and uniform framing of the appliance fronts.
What kind of finish does the roller shutter cabinet have? Appliances are black, side-by-side refrigerator in silver-gray, the front is another patterned gray, and then the roller shutter cabinet has a light gray shade.
The built-in coffee machine seems a bit high, doesn’t it? You would probably always have to tilt the coffee cup downward automatically.
The corner window seems out of place to me – it doesn’t coordinate at all with the kitchen layout, although I do like the arrangement of the wall cabinets next to the side window. But the other window just seems to hang there without purpose.

Personally, I think the desire for symmetry has become excessive nowadays. It’s better to plan asymmetrically, especially when it comes to drawers, in order to significantly increase usability.

I have no objection as long as the function is provided. But that is not the case here... 😉
