Bought a house, estimated the renovation budget plus 10-15% for inevitable extras, and we set aside 5000 EUR for the kitchen!!!!

That’s how it started... at first, I was in a bit of shock, but we still had time. First step: remove all the walls for a new layout—I need space...

Let’s start with the (according to the agent) move-in ready property. The small kitchen, just under 8 square meters (about 86 square feet), had its 1970s pass-through removed. The wall including the kitchen door is gone! The wall next to the cellar stairs is gone too! Actually, the entire slanted wall, nearly 7 meters (23 feet) high, removed completely...

The window had to go as well since we needed a different working height than the standard 90 cm (35 inches). New screed installed, we switched to underfloor heating, all electrical wiring and water pipes are new.

After almost six months, the realization slowly sank in: the kitchen budget will not exceed 5000 EUR, so we had to look for a used kitchen... something special, but very cheap.

The search criteria: within a 100 km (62 miles) radius, up to 1000 EUR, because I still want new appliances.

The kitchen from @fragg would be far too cluttered for me again, especially the refrigerator... you can hardly see it anymore.

Best regards,

May I ask which range hood you have there?

Thanks.

It’s the Siemens LF26RH560, which is no longer listed on Siemens’ website but can still be purchased. It’s 1.20 meters (4 feet) wide and really powerful. When it’s on, the candles on the Advent wreath in the dining room flicker.

This is not a photo but just a planning image. Once the planning is nearly finished and you have selected the kitchen, flooring, and so on, the anticipation of moving into the house becomes simply huge.

I don’t want to spoil the fun, but the layout is far from good. Even in my student flat with a single-wall kitchen, I had more space between the sink and the cooktop.
All that’s missing now is the oven under the stove, then you’ll have managed to fit a kitchen into a large room that, in terms of comfort, is comparable to a classic single-wall kitchen.

I consider long distances between the sink and the cooktop to be a major design flaw, but opinions and habits naturally vary. In our current kitchen, we have this setup, and it works perfectly for us. When I take a hot, heavy pot off the stove and want to drain water, I don’t want to have to walk halfway across the house first. Likewise, for me, the sink needs to be within arm’s reach of the stove so I can easily place lids, spoons, hot items, or anything else that might drip, all with one hand. The sink is also used during cooking and is not just for show.
