I am currently planning my IKEA kitchen and definitely want to place it on legs (Capita or UTBY) because it stands in a relatively small living room and, in my opinion, looks much lighter than with a plinth/baseboard. A dishwasher is absolutely necessary, though – since it basically stands freely between two cabinets, I plan to cover the bottom with a custom-made plinth (using materials from the hardware store or an IKEA plinth). The rest of the cabinets will be on legs.
My question: has anyone done this? Does it still look reasonably elegant or rather clumsy?
Option 2 would be a compact tabletop dishwasher (e.g., from Bosch, usually 55cm (22 inches) wide, 50cm (20 inches) deep, 45cm (18 inches) high), placed inside a Faktum base cabinet (the cabinet itself can stand on legs). Does anyone have this setup at home? Are there concerns (not enough ventilation space, maybe they should stand free? Damage from steam?)
Thank you very much for your input!

Nayla_106824 Oct 2012 16:51In my opinion, dishwashers should always stand freely and have only one door. For built-in models, meaning those installed within a cabinet, I would expect moisture damage sooner or later. Even standard dishwashers are often handled incorrectly—for example, leaving the door slightly open after a cycle to air them out. This is a critical mistake because it can affect not only the front of the dishwasher but also the countertop and possibly adjacent cabinets. Therefore, ALWAYS keep the dishwasher door closed until it has completely cooled down. If necessary, then leave the door slightly ajar to allow any remaining water to evaporate, or open the door fully after the wash cycle and let it stay open.
Back to the question: If you have the option to place the dishwasher at the very edge, it doesn’t look as bad if you then fit a toe kick panel. Since the feet are usually made of stainless steel, you should choose a panel with a stainless steel look or, a tip I often give customers, get a mirror film and stick it to the toe kick panel. It looks great and makes the panel less noticeable.
