Hello everyone,
we received the approval to purchase a house yesterday and are extremely excited. We are already deep into planning, and the kitchen is part of that.
The kitchen is 18 years old and actually still in good condition. We wouldn’t change the layout much; what would be different is adding a tall cabinet on the far right and having the kitchen island straight instead of offset as it is in the picture. Also, we don’t like the color (vanilla yellow). There are also too many handles for our taste.
Do you think a gentle renovation could work, such as replacing the cabinet fronts? Applying a laminate or foil finish? Any other ideas or inputs we might have overlooked?
We would actually prefer not to spend around $30,000 again on a new kitchen...

I would take one front panel to a carpenter and ask if it is possible to fill the holes and paint it.
Replace the niche back panels, install a new induction cooktop and a new, concealed extractor hood. The carpenter can build a suitable cabinet for this. Nobilia and similar brands are not comparable in quality to this kitchen.

He is bothered by the handles and the color of the cabinets... what difference would a new floor make? I think the kitchen would look completely different if there was a completely different floor. At least it would be worth trying, especially if you already don’t like the floor very much.
A color appears different with a changed background, like a picture on the wall or something similar.
Everyone perceives this differently, so it’s an idea I would consider. You can easily simulate it to get a better idea.
Ideas like changing the handles, getting a new kitchen, or painting the cabinet fronts have already been suggested; this idea doesn’t hurt, and if it’s not an option, then it’s fine.

As I wrote, I was rather thinking about placing something "thin" on top.
That was just an idea for the person asking the question, so there’s no need for us to analyze it further.
When brainstorming, you generally shouldn’t prematurely shut down ideas just because you don’t like them or can’t imagine them.
We don’t know the taste or preferences of the person asking, so whether something fits or not can be decided by them; besides, an idea doesn’t hurt.
