Hello everyone,
we received the approval to purchase a house yesterday and are extremely excited. We are already deep into planning, and the kitchen is part of that.
The kitchen is 18 years old and actually still in good condition. We wouldn’t change the layout much; what would be different is adding a tall cabinet on the far right and having the kitchen island straight instead of offset as it is in the picture. Also, we don’t like the color (vanilla yellow). There are also too many handles for our taste.
Do you think a gentle renovation could work, such as replacing the cabinet fronts? Applying a laminate or foil finish? Any other ideas or inputs we might have overlooked?
We would actually prefer not to spend around $30,000 again on a new kitchen...

That’s too many handles for my taste as well.
What kind of manufacturer is that? Many manufacturers use standard dimensions and offer replacement doors, so you can retrofit new fronts, for example, handleless ones. You can also replace some cabinets—for instance, use drawers instead of doors or swap a tall cabinet for a mid-height one. Sometimes a kitchen is refreshed by replacing a cabinet with an accent front or wrapping it, or by exchanging it for a unique display cabinet according to your taste.
If needed, wall cabinets can be replaced with shallower ones.
Basically, many changes are possible.
You can also apply your own laminate or wrap, but that involves a lot of work. Beforehand, you would need to fill the handle holes and then drill new ones selectively.

The kitchen is 18 years old and actually still in good condition. We wouldn’t change much in the layout, but what would be different is adding a tall cabinet on the far right and having the kitchen island flush instead of offset as it is now in the picture. Also, we don’t like the color (vanilla yellow). There are also too many handles for our taste.

We’d rather not spend around $30,000 right away on a new kitchen…Yes, something along those lines is what I’m thinking – replacing the fronts, swapping the mid-height cabinet for a tall one, possibly enclosing the range hood…
The manufacturer is Hans Eisenring (Switzerland).
What kind of costs should we expect? How much does a single cabinet front approximately cost?

I would get a quote from a kitchen showroom and one from a carpenter.
It shouldn't be too expensive. I would estimate around 3,000 to 5,000 euros, but I expect the carpenter to be cheaper.
If the fronts are painted, you could also fill the handle holes with filler, have them repainted at an (auto) body shop, and then install new handles.
Through a kitchen showroom or carpenter, it would probably cost at least 5000 euros. Matching the countertop may also require a new worktop, or you accept the gap and get base cabinets of a suitable height for the back of the peninsula, reusing the existing worktop.
