ᐅ Kitchen appliances you wouldn’t want to live without?

Hello everyone,

Like many others, I am building a new house and sooner or later I will need to plan the kitchen as well.
In my current rental apartment, I have a standard fridge-freezer combination stacked vertically (80cm (31.5 inches) wide), a ceramic cooktop, and a combined oven with fan.
I also use countertop appliances like an electric kettle, sous-vide stick, microwave, vacuum sealer, and a food processor (Bosch).

I cook regularly and enjoy trying new recipes but haven’t really looked into new appliances yet.
I should also mention that I am planning an outdoor kitchen with a grill station and deep fryer, so while indoor grilling will still be an option, it can be done outside as well. The frying will definitely be outside due to the smell.

But what would you say is so great that you absolutely need to have it?

Cheers

The mini countertop oven. It might not be brilliant, but it’s definitely worth using instead of the main oven just to warm up two rolls quickly. It’s also great for toasting things and, for example, reheating leftover pizza from the day before.

In addition to the usual appliances, we are planning to install a steam cooker. My girlfriend follows a dietary approach that involves a lot of vegetables, and steaming them in a pot isn’t very convenient. Apparently, reheating food with it works quite well too.

Personally, I’m not a fan of the Quooker. A kettle is enough for boiling water, and I have a soda maker for sparkling water. It’s much cheaper, and you can replace each component independently and affordably. I see no reason to spend thousands of dollars on a fancy tap.

We planned an open compartment in the kitchen unit for the fully automatic coffee machine. We now use it every morning.
Otherwise, a lot has already been mentioned. We also installed a multi-zone induction cooktop with an integrated downdraft extractor. This provides more "freedom" in the work area above. It’s also important not to forget the power outlets in the countertop, especially for us since we have a kitchen island.

I would rather do without appliances than lose countertop space. The work surface should be at least 2 meters by 1.50 meters (6.6 feet by 5 feet) long. I prefer to bend down in front of my oven and dishwasher than give up any space. 🙂

Until recently, I had a combination steam oven (that is, an oven with full steam functionality). I decided not to have one in my new house. It felt like too much hassle and extra cleaning. Now I have a solid, secondhand oven from Neff that “only” functions as an oven. The bread turns out just as well with a small dish of water inside the oven as it did in the combination steam oven.

What I really wouldn’t want to miss is a stand mixer with an aluminum base instead of plastic. Unfortunately, I only have a fully plastic one that looks grimy after 15 years, plus a small food processor that can chop nuts—for making pesto.

The induction cooktop replaces the electric kettle. The freezer chest is still incredibly practical and something I definitely wouldn’t want to miss. Power outlets on the side panel of the kitchen island are absolutely invaluable.

And because I enjoy baking bread, I have a small electric mill for grinding flour and pressing oats. It’s great but rather an oddity among kitchen appliances.

An oven plus oven trays are already very valuable. 😀

I much prefer baking my bread in a steam combination oven rather than a conventional oven with water trays. I find the results much more convincing.

I have a U-shape layout, with one leg flush against the wall measuring 1.60 meters (5 feet 3 inches) including the sink + 1.00 meter (3 feet 3 inches) for the fridge + the cross leg 60 centimeters (24 inches) deep + the front leg 1.70 meters (5 feet 7 inches) including the cooktop. Not that much can be changed now, but is that big enough?
