knalltüte29 Apr 2020 20:36... outside the thermal envelope ...
At first, we had quite a bit of trouble finding space for all the technical equipment.
The heat pump, storage tank, electricity meter, photovoltaic battery, inverter, etc. all need some space for a four-unit dwelling.
Then we came up with the idea of an external utility room that can be built on the property boundary (if no fireplace or oil/gas heating system is installed).
After that, we were informed that the guidelines/conditions for KfW40+ state that the heat generators must be inside the thermal envelope.
That made us doubt whether this would be feasible.
Today we received good news: Our architect called KfW and was told that it is allowed.
I thought this information might serve as both a suggestion and useful info to consider an external utility room (as an alternative to an expensive basement).

knalltüte7 May 2020 17:46... today we received the plans from the architect and also had a brief phone call. However, since we have all been very busy, we were unfortunately only able to exchange a few details for now.
An external room for technical equipment is definitely acceptable. It will be attached directly to the north side of the house and will align with the property boundary at the top. It does not need to be insulated to the extent required for KfW40+ standard, but only frost-proof or insulated as much as necessary for the equipment. According to KfW regulations, the "inside" of the thermal envelope is specifically required for KfW55 standard in individual cases. I am not an architect or energy consultant and did not understand this any better in the short amount of time. But the important thing is that it works for us with KfW40+ / Passive House standard!
